Preface

For over thirty years, the first ten editions of Your Attitude Is Showing have been used in the classroom and workplace to train both new and experienced employees. Over one million copies of the book have been distributed. Your Attitude Is Showing remains one of the most highly regarded primers in the field of business human relations.

Your Attitude Is Showing has helped individuals of all ages and backgrounds play their human-relations roles with greater understanding and sensitivity. Everyone who seeks self-improvement will welcome this eleventh edition.

In the eleventh edition of Your Attitude Is Showing, readers will find new and updated materials in each of the chapters while the many popular features of the book have been retained. For example, a "Thought for the Day" is introduced at the beginning of each chapter for the reader to ponder as the chapter is studied. Throughout the chapters, there are also short statements of importance featured in the side margins. At the end of each chapter is an "Attitude Box" that further reinforces one or more of the chapter's key concepts. Readers are encouraged to refer to the Thoughts for the Day, margin reminders, and the Attitude Boxes on a regular basis. These short statements are provided to encourage the reader to stop and think about being more positive toward attitude improvement.

In this edition, at the beginning of each chapter, readers will be introduced to three performance competencies. The performance competencies are statements that will help the reader identify, as well as focus on, the important concepts that are discussed in the chapter. The performance competencies are further reinforced by a short summary at the end of each chapter.

Another new feature of this edition is the addition of chapter interactive activities. Each activity was designed to give the reader a practical experience to better understand and apply the chapter concepts. That is, readers who conscientiously complete the activities will reinforce their understanding of the chapter, and thus, will be in a better position to apply what they have learned to their own lives. (Note: A separate Self-Paced Exercise Guide to accompany Your Attitude Is Showing, eleventh edition, also is available from the publisher. The Guide is a reader-friendly interactive workbook that augments and expands this book.)

To further promote personal and professional development, Test Your Understanding assessments have been added at the end of each chapter to reinforce the reader's understanding of the chapter. These assessments consist of three types of items: true and false, multiple choice, and short answer. Also, readers of the book are encouraged to contemplate the end-of-chapter cases. Each case will give the reader a good opportunity to analyze a situation that represents an all-too-common reality in the workplace. Answers to the Test Your Understanding assessments and suggested responses to the cases appear at the end of the book.

As you read and study Your Attitude Is Showing, keep in mind that people who balance their technical skills and knowledge base with human-relations competencies find greater on-the-job happiness, contribute more to the productivity of organizations, and, in general, have more successful careers and satisfying lives. And, remember, no matter what you do, Your Attitude Is Showing!

2.0 out of 5 stars Authors' attitudes are showing..., July 12, 2006
This review is from: Your Attitude is Showing: A Primer on Human Relations [NetEffect Series] (11th Edition) (Paperback)
The slant of this book is hard to ignore.

It emphasizes the importance of "go along to get along" over almost all else.

In the battle between individuals and big companies for who controls individual will, who owns the knowledge in an individual's head, and how much of an individual's life belongs to the organization, "Your Attitude is Showing" is a white flag for anyone with an independent mind.

The authors' arguments for why a person should (must) set aside self and individuality for the good of the company and wishes of the management are flawed. It assumes that there will be good things to come for the person who improves attitudes, and fails to consider the grander issues, like whether it's desirable for a society as a whole to create a sea of automatons with great attitudes.

To this book, my answer would be: success comes not through smiles and glad handing. To build a world with any aspirations of justice and peace, we need more than just attitude. We need substance, people who will work hard, and honesty.

Solving human relations problems requires something a bit stronger than the band-aid of day to day attitudes that this book prescribes.
