Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Mungo has been teaching "Lit Biz 101" since 1972, and on the basis of that experience, he offers these questions, quotations, and suggestions for compiling one's memoirs. Written in an anecdotal rather than a list fashion, his guide stimulates both memory and writing skills through the use of examples and many poignant questions, such as "What was your mother like?" and "Did a teacher ever criticize you?" Helpful for a class or an individual. Denise Perry Donavin

"Your Autobiograpy" by Ray Mungo
I was delighted to find Ray Mungo's out-of-print memoir-writing book through Amazon's used book dealers.
I'd used his prompts frequently several years ago and then lent it to a non-returning colleague.
What I liked about his prompts was the variety -- suggesting the juicy details,
then pulling back to the philosophical questions about our lives as we've lived them.
This approach encourages us to include the events, issues and details
that will make our writing sparkle with interesting characters and textures
that create the fabric of life. Now Ray Mungo is back in my library,
ready to help me with the "career" chapters that represent countless
hours and years of living, yet are absent in my story.
No more procrastination! No more excuses! Hit the computer and type the words!

I was very disappointed. In search of sample interview questions to interview children for a children's book series, I expected 300 questions. Instead, it was chapters and paragraphs. I think it is severely mis-titled. A more appropriate title would be "Things to Consider When Writing Your Personal History".

But the product arrived promptly. For my purposes, minus the shipping fee, it was appropriately priced at $2.
