Book Description

As featured on Indie-music.com, Think Like A Label, I Am Entertainment Magazine, Antimusic.com, and recommended by countless music publications, "Your Band Is A Virus! Expanded Edition" is the bigger and better version of the best selling book "Your Band Is A Virus - Behind-the-Scenes & Viral Marketing for the Independent Musician". At double the size of it's predecessor, it is the ultimate music marketing guide for serious independent musicians and bands.

Independent musicians in 2012 find themselves more confused than ever before. "Your Band Is A Virus - Expanded Edition" presents a complete paradigm shift in both the way artists promote and why they do it.

Advocating breaking the rules, bringing truly original expressions to the world, encouraging controversy, timing a release for optimum impact, promoting to music publications with his behind-the-scenes method, taking advantage of the user-generated revolution with a freelancers army, properly marketing music videos, embracing the free music model, and thinking outside the box, "Your Band Is A Virus" presents an actionable and inspired approach to music marketing coming from James Moore, founder of Independent Music Promotions. James's words have been shared by the likes of CDBaby, Reverbnation, the Lefsetz Letter, the Indie Bible, Indie-Music.com, the DIY Daily and Buzzsonic.com..

"The intention of the book is to completely wipe out many of the misconceptions musicians have when it comes to music marketing. I'm a music promoter. This book wasn't written by an entertainment lawyer or a label CEO. I'm DIY and I write about what has worked for me, and many of the ideas I'm happy to say just don't get talked about anywhere else. It's all straight talk and actionable advice. Musicians have the most trouble and confusion about generating press, so that's what I focus on. There's a lot of misinformation out there, so I hope this book inspires and brings clarity to artists" says Moore.

This special expanded edition also includes an industry insiders interview series featuring legendary producer Stuart Epps (Led Zeppelin, Elton John), HIP Video Promo CEO Andy Gesner (HIP has worked with Johnny Cash, Bon Iver, Pearl Jam, Of Montreal), Justin Wayne of the Justin Wayne show, Katie O'Halloran of Ithinkiloveit.com and Crystal Lee of Vandala Concepts Magazine.

From the Author

Hi everyone, I'm particularly excited about releasing "Your Band Is A Virus - Expanded Edition", as the main goal of the book was to have a real, human conversation free from hype and illusory promises. There is so much unnecessary talk in the music industry, and it's easy to become distracted. The over-arching philosophy has become convoluted and confused, and artists are confused too.
With my experience being a music promoter working only with "music with depth", my perspective, I feel, is radically different from many others in the business. While I do explore avenues on making more money, my main expertise and passion is getting high amounts of press and coverage for meaningful art. So if you play music with depth, or even if you're an entrepreneur or small business owner looking for creative ways to get your product known, I'd love for you to join the conversation.
I hope you enjoy the book.
Sincerely,
James Moore

4.0 out of 5 stars James Moore's wealth of useful information December 2, 2012
By Dan
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Anybody not living under a rock knows the music business has changed -- forever. With Your Band is a Virus, James Moore wastes no time bemoaning how it used to be because those days won't be coming back. The idea that a band can get signed, record a hit album and live in the lap of luxury forevermore is an outdated notion, if it ever even truly existed -- except for a special few.

The best thing about Moore's book is how much information it contains. It is stocked with countless links, for instance, related to his various music business chapters. Sure, you can spend your days searching the internet for relevant websites. But why not buy Moore's book and have them all at your fingertips? I'm not a musician, but a music journalist, and I found at least five good writing leads from this book; ones I didn't even know existed before reading the book.

More than just listing links, though, this work contains Moore's experienced commentary on each link. He's contacted many of these himself and gives his honest opinion on whether or not they're worth a musician's time.

It's also the way he goes into the pros and cons of different music business hot topics. For instance, if you're a musician and you're wondering if you should give away free music, this book contains Moore's sound opinion on the topic. Granted, everybody wants to make money. But in today's world, musicians won't make any money until they create a track record proving they're worth it. The title of his book speaks of how a band/musician is a virus. In other words, you're no longer a producer of products for sale. Rather, you ARE the product. You must make yourself a valuable commodity. You need to get yourself talked about. You need to get listened to.

5.0 out of 5 stars And you better know how to beat the innoculations December 3, 2012
By Brian
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Henry Rollin's "Get In The Van" was the bible for how to make music independently twenty years ago, though not nearly as cool, "Your Band Is A Virus" serves the same purpose here and now. So while not nearly as cool as living in vans and physically threatening vomit crusted bar owners for your pay, getting attention on the internet at least smells better. This book covers everything, and most importantly and continuing the title's metaphor, that work and saving money makes you SARS. The biggest hurdle to come over, the thing everyone has been inoculated with regarding finding a band on the internet is the thought "who the hell cares". This book covers a lot of ground to get past that vaccine.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for ALL MUSICIANS! December 2, 2012
By Ms July
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Your Band Is A Virus is a serious guide for musicians, whether pro or weekend warrior. YBIAV is jam packed with useful tips and tools for getting your art heard, seen and submitted to the right people and most importantly, building a brand name and fan base efficiently and effectively. Author James Moore has done his research, several years of it in fact, and makes it available to those who need it most, the artist.

The book is not only informative and humorous at times, but it's also motivational as you'll find yourself encouraged to actually put it's content to use. Your Band Is A Virus is essential to anyone who wants to learn how to gain exposure without spending a fortune. It also clearly demonstrates how marketing works and how important it is to get 'behind the scenes'.

If you're an aspiring artist or band, do yourself a favor and PICK UP THIS BOOK! With your potential career at stake, this book will guide you through each step, while keeping you from making crucial mistakes that many artists often make because they were misinformed or just plain lazy.

This book is an absolute essential read for every independent musician that wants to know "what actually works in the world of getting the word-of-mouth engine buzzing online."

James has at least one little-used-yet-powerful-marketing-concept on every page of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Antidote to Ambiguity July 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Right from the start I could tell this book was the real deal. I've checked several "band self help" books but rarely found much insight in them that was applicable to my own band, and this was usually because such books only offer ambiguous "you should" lists. But then here comes 'You're Band Is A Virus' with very specific and pragmatic tips and techniques - just a few pages in I was already fitting its puzzle pieces into my own business strategy. I'm very thankful for this resource and hope more musicians will benefit from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best $15 I spent on my band this year! May 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I Just devoured your band is a virus for the 3rd time in two days!! I leave for a national tour of music festival in 8 days and are scrambling with my band mates to fill some of things we have overlooked. Thank you so much for this honest face slap of a book. We were doing many things right instinctively but many things wrong as well. Thanks for the map to right the ship! Seriously the best $15 I spent this year in regards to marketing. So stoked I found it!
