I am in full-time ministry with college students and have been in Christian circles long enough to flip the pages of many books on leadership, purpose, identity and related matters, but none has ever described my heart and experiences quite as distinctly as Susie's latest release. With amazing clarity, she describes the forces that are at work trying to overshadow a clear view of my heart and life free from fears, failures and insecurities. Many times I literally read a paragraph and said out loud, "WOW! I think she wrote this just for me!". Susie has a keen understanding of the inner workings of our hearts as women and is not afraid to also talk about the tactics of the enemy that will knock us off course if we let them!

One chapter in particular (Chapter 4) talked about the connection between our fears and sins and our threat to the enemy and how he attempts to threaten us. This chapter alone took days to slowly digest and with the help of the study questions at the end, I believe I unlocked things that have remained hidden and kept me stuck for years! Let me put it this way - I am certain that I would be saving highlighter ink if I just highlighted the sentences that didn't strike something very deep and profound in my spirit. I am deeply grateful for Susie, for her endurance in her own experiences and for her boldness and giftedness as a writer in putting to words the things so many of our hearts have experienced but wouldn't know how to express!

If you've ever heard Susie Larson speak, you want to take her home with you to be your mentor. And reading Your Beautiful Purpose is a chance to do just that!

Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this he meant the Spirit... ~John 7:37-38

"Your Beautiful Purpose" is the stream flowing from Susie's life. She dwells at the Well of Living Water and is living her beautiful purpose. This book is our chance to reap the overflow, to glean from her walk of faith. I walked through this book very slowly and God met me in the pages.

In closing my gift shop, and recently becoming an empty nester, I'm at another of life's crossroads asking, "What's next Lord?" I discovered that I am in a season of active waiting. Susie names the seasons we will experience on our journey with God, "Run, Rest, Stand, and Active Waiting." And enables us to discern which one (or more) we may be in and to walk through each one victoriously. Susie shares with humility, tenderness and transparency the experiences she has had on her great adventure. With stories from her life, she explains the sometimes-difficult lessons and often exhilarating God-moments on her way to being a public voice for Jesus who nourishes and encourages so many.

Jesus often asked questions to draw out the truth from within those he was ministering to. At the end of each chapter Susie does that very thing. Her questions lead you to the feet of Jesus with your own questions, and in so doing, leads you to deeper interaction, deeper intimacy with Jesus.

I don't know why I do this to myself. I don't even really like non-fiction books. Or, I should say, they're not easy reads for me. But I was hoping that this one would rejuvenate me in my weariness from mothering. I admit I was hoping to read some great encouragement to press on in my tasks, even if they are small and seemingly unnoticed. Because, let's be honest, my current God-honoring purpose in life is not glamorous. But it IS my purpose.

What I found instead is a woman who seems to think that my true purpose in life must be bigger and louder and more noteworthy than the role I'm currently "settling" for. That maybe I'm not trusting God to use me to my full potential. That the current trials of the day are refining me for something bigger and better.

Here's a quote from pages 93-94:
"On the other side of this refining time is a fresh perspective and new mercies. Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God; in due time you will be lifted up and honored before a watching world."

And another, from page 121:
"Daring to dream is no small thing. And it's not for the faint of heart. But in Christ we are called, appointed, and equipped to live lives bigger than we are...Can you and I win the inner battle that keeps us from living out God's highest and best purposes for us?"

Susie Osteen, anyone?

What if God really intends for me to live my life in obscurity? What if his big purpose for my life is to do little things, and die never being recognized for them? Does this make us question the goodness of God, or does it mean that we have missed his purpose for us?

Absolutely not!

Here's a thought for us:
Maybe it's not all about ME!

If you're wondering if you'll relate to Susie's book or not, all you need to do is open the first couple pages to find your answer! Susie writes "Your Beautiful Purpose" with three women in mind:

(Excerpt from the book)
1) The first is the woman with a buried passion, a desire in her heart yet to be fulfilled.
2) Then there's the woman who's been so beat down by life, had so many of her heartfelt desires pushed aside that's she's barely alive, hardly passionate. She's afraid to dream, because she'd rather not be disappointed.
3) The last woman is earnest in her walk with Jesus, but doesn't resonate with words like dream, or calling. She wants to be faithful right where she lives. She loves her familiar territory but lives unaware of the more God has for her.

All of us can relate to each one of the women Susie describes! Susie eloquently shows you through many stories and pieces of Scripture on how to fulfill God's beautiful purpose for our lives. You'll finish the book fired up and ready to work with God to accomplish His work.

"Your Beautiful Purpose" would also be the perfect Bible Study book to work through with your friends, complete with chapter study questions.

Look no longer for a New Year's resolution - start reading "Your Beautiful Purpose" to find out what God has in store for your New Year!
