From School Library Journal
Grade 7-12-Hearing the Pitch explains advertising and its formats, examining the various devices used to influence people; Search and Succeed is a step-by-step guide to understanding and making the best use of help-wanted ads; and Your Best Foot Forward gives easy-to-follow directions for successfully landing a job. Most of the information is straightforward and helpful. Good examples are given, the writing is clear, and the glossaries enhance readability for less able readers. Black-and-white and full-color photos illustrate many points effectively and add interest. Although the books seem to be for children, with their slightly tall, slim size and large, well-spaced print, the content is for YAs. However, there are a few inaccuracies. In Search, minimum wage is listed as $4.50 per hour. Also, the abbreviation is usually "OBO" for "or best offer," not "BO." Classified listers are given some cautions that don't make complete sense, and they are told that a bill for placing an ad must be paid up front, when in reality many newspapers will send an invoice to the customer. In Best Foot, the photos of a girl being interviewed that appear on the cover and inside the book show her wearing dirty sneakers, while even the text remarks that "carelessness in dress and personal appearance" is a pitfall.
