More About the Author

"Joe Friel has a masters degree in exercise science and has trained endurance athletes since 1980. His clients include elite amateur and professional road cyclists, mountain bikers, and triathletes and duathletes. His clients have included national champions, world championship competitors, and an Olympian.

He is the author of several training books and is a contributor to several magazines and websites around the world and offers clinics, seminars, and camps for athletes and coaches. He also consults with national sport federations and with businesses in the fitness industry. He is the cofounder of TrainingPeaks.com and TrainingBible Coaching.

As an age-group competitor, Joe has been a Colorado State Masters Triathlon champion, a Rocky Mountain region and Southwest region duathlon age-group champion, and a perennial USA Triathlon All-American duathlete. He also competes in bicycle races.

This is the most useful and interesting book that I've read on training. I've actually read it cover-to-cover, which is weird.

Here's what you get: complete training schedules for Sprint, Olympic, Half-Ironman and Ironman. Given - at best - around 25 weeks to your main race of the season, training is broken down into parts: Prep, Base 1-3, Build 1 and 2, Peak and Race.

The phases are addressed separately, so you get a Prep chapter, 3 Base chapters and ... you get the picture. The chapters address specific training skills for each sport at each level e.g. several specific speed drills for bike pedaling during Base 1. But they also address and evolve your internal process. It's thorough, specific and often original.

I worried I would need to read his earlier book but it wasn't necessary.

This book is ideal for anyone who wants to improve their training strategies. Many of us dive into the sport of triathlon ready to "hit the ground running" and unfortunately, never take methodical steps to build the basic and essential components to succeed in endurance racing. "Your Best Triathlon" may have saved me from a few frustrating years of questioning my athletic progress and potential. I also appreciate Friel's scientifically sound reasoning behind many endurance principles and training regimens. Great for workout planning AND leisure reading!

This is a good addition to Friel's Training Bible. It actually includes training plans, which is nice, and helps the reader focus on the individual's goals, not only for the year, or race...but also to focus on the goal of each training session.

An excellent training partner for triathletes of varying types but is directed more toward at those who already have an understanding of training techniques and as such abbreviations of workout type(s). A great supplement to triathletes bible as it is somewhat assumed you are already applying these workouts or have access to the first book for these. Well written and could certainly set you up for a successful race or season.

Joe Friel does it again and again. He seems to write about triathlons in every book, and somehow manages to provide more and more useful insight. This book doesn't replace any of his others, it's an amazing addition. The Triathlete's Training Bible is a great overview for how to plan a season. Your Best Triathlon tells you exactly how to prepare on a day-to-day basis and make the best use of your time.
