it's not often you get the pleasure of experiencing a band like Black Lab. 3.0 out of 5 stars an average cd from an average band
There are some great songs on this album, but unfortunatly they are held down by some of the gloomy not-so-great songs. "Time Ago" is an upbeat, awesome song, but I was wrong to think that the rest of the album would be just like that song. In fact the rest of the album is dreary and down, and don't buy it unless you've listened to it, and you're ready to...

it's not often you get the pleasure of experiencing a band like Black Lab. After hearing "Tell Me What To Say" from the CAN'T HARDLY WAIT sdtrk, i purchased this album with hopes of finding an enhanced addition to the kind of great music they contributed to that sdtrk. "Wash It Away" is one of the best damn rockers i have ever heard. As well, hard hitting tunes like "X-Ray" and "Can't Stop The Rain" keep the album on a path that does not get overshadowed by incredible ballad-like songs that are present here. "Time Ago" is melodic, deep, and emotional, and although it stands as a great love song, it's presence could be forgotten when compared to "Gates of the Country", a beautiful song with incredible arrangements, tear-jerking lyrics, and a mood of sadness too stunning to resist. Perhaps two of the best songs you will find here are "Anything", a mid-tempo rocker with an instantly addicting opening harmony that builds into a spectacular chorus, and my personal favourite cut, "Ten Million Years", a song about undying, everlasting love with smooth vocals and amazing rhythms which create the foundations for one of the most beautiful choruses you will ever lay ears on. The vocals are quite reminiscent of Bono's pre-"Pop" days, and the album itself boasts a newfound freshness that is no where else to be found anywhere on radio or MTV. If you love straight-forward, original clear-cut rock'n roll, indulge yourself by getting your hands on "Your Body Above Me".

5.0 out of 5 stars Top 10... Ok, Top 5, June 27, 2005
This review is from: Your Body Above Me (Audio CD)
Maybe one of my top seven or eight albums ever. I love it and try to share it with everyone because the band got so ripped off in the 1990s they deserve success. Every song is magic and stands up to an entire day in my cd player.

I also just got my copy of their new album See the sun and it's just as amazing. Ive been listening to it for three days straight and already ordered more. You can only get it at their website -- www.blacklabworld.com.

Not sure what else to say other than you should get this album...
JB.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Like a fire burning out of the fireplace", February 3, 2004

This CD is one of my favorites of the 1990s. It is almost perfect. I first heard this band when "Wash it Away" was being played over and over on the radio. It took some time before I found out the name of the band who made this incredible song and rushed out to buy the CD. The whole album is amazing from the powerful guitar riffs to the emotionally-driven vocals. "X-Ray" is another one of my favorites; it just kicks as does "Can't Keep the Rain." "Anything" is brilliant (excellent backing vocals) and "Ten Million Years" is a beautiful power ballad. But every song here is 5 star all the way! I cannot write well enough to do this album justice. Just buy it! (Note: the CD booklet includes lyrics and dark photos of each band member).

4.0 out of 5 stars A real jewel, September 24, 1999
This review is from: Your Body Above Me (Audio CD)
Every once in awhile, you find one of those albums that has talented musicians crafting skillful songs around thoughtfull lyrics. This is one of those. The music and lyrics are dark without being morose, and ride a fine between brittle angst and the fragileness of the human experience. This is a must have. Take a chance on an excellent CD from a band I hope will resurface sometime soon with another masterpiece

I first heard of Black Lab from the Spider-Man 1 soundtrack. One of the best songs on that Cd. I just had to find more of Black Lab so I went on Amazon and I found "Your body above me". I love this cd. Awesome vocals, lyrics and musically a great sound! If I had heard them back in 1997 I would have been a huge fan ...story of my life. Anyway, anyone know if they had anyother recordings? I'll search the web. If you liked the songs X-Ray, Wash it Away, Time Ago then you will like the whole cd. It plays well all the way through...no need to skip tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just radio songs..., October 4, 2001
This review is from: Your Body Above Me (Audio CD)
Years and years ago i heard Wash It Away on the radio a few times. I liked it, but never really felt a need to get the album. A few weeks ago, for some reason, i remembered the song and picked up the album, mostly for nostalgia's sake. This was possibly one of the best music-related decisions i've made.

While Wash It Away, the most common song to hear on the radio, is definitely a good song, the other radio song (Time Ago) is much better. And even so, neither of these even come close to the power and emotion of Gates of the Country, or my personal favorite, Ten Million Years. And if you're not in the mood for songs full of sadness and longing, you can go for lighter songs like Sleeps With Angels, or angrier songs like All The Money In The World.

Your Body Above Me, aside from having a catchy title, had a fantastic variety contained in its 12 tracks, a song for every mood. This album is worth every penny you spend on it, and probably more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Lab's album is a stunning musical achievement., November 8, 1998

This album is by far the best I have ever heard. While some say that only the first five songs rock, I disagree. The whole CD is simply gripping and emotionally heartwrenching, especially track #12, "Gates of the Country." Black Lab is the most promising band around, and I look forward to their next album. Their dark, introspective lyrics and music make them unique. If you are a fan of U2 or Live, buy this CD.

If you like Black lab. Grab Paul Durham's earlier works from Blacklabworld.com It's the best acoustic album I've heard since...well, in a while. Pop it in your CD player and take a drive...you'll be looking at things and forming still images in your mind. It's a great album. You can go to his site and listen to 90 second clips if you're interested. Black Lab, See the sun, and PD kick!

This review is from: Your Body Above Me (Audio CD)
This album is by far the best album I have ever listened to. It really is a shame that there isn't more out by these guys. This album should be in every music fan's collection. Check out track 6, "Thin White Lie", my personal favorite. Excellent album.

Black Lab is one of the most invigorating, satisfying sounds I have heard in a long time. Every song is strong - not a bad one on the whole cd, and I love a cd you can listen to the whole way through and every song sounds different. When the annoying bubblegum pop, rap and weak kiddie rock sounds of today have taken over the airwaves (none of which appeals to this rock fan) it is very exciting to discover a melodic rock sound that captivates my imagination. I first heard their song "Keep Myself Awake" from the Buffy soundtrack whose singer's voice intrigued me so much I bought this great cd "Your Body Above Me". Be prepared to enjoy the rocking tunes ("X Ray" is the best)as well as the ballads. I hope that real music where the singer actually sings melodic rock is coming back. I wish they would come out with a new cd. I'm going to keep checking for new music to satisfy my musical appetite. You'll fall for Black Lab and just be hungry for more! Excellent group and awesome cd.
