A Testament to the Merits of True Vocal Talent
on September 17, 2012
I was a fan of Christina's Bionic "misstep" as it did have its shining moments ("Elastic Love" comes to mind) but since it turned out to be a commercial disappointment, I was very curious to hear what her next step would be. Enter "Your Body" from the upcoming Lotus album. The first thing I'll say is that it sounds like it's clearly designed to appeal to pop radio and win her back the audience who were turned off by the relative misfire that was "Not Myself Tonight". It's got a pulsing electronic rhythm and synths that are found in many songs nowadays. Second, the lyrics aren't anything special as Christina expresses her desire for some intimacy with her partner's body and her own sexual prowess.
With that said, Christina manages to pull this off quite nicely with a conviction that sounds a lot more convincing than most pop stars, largely thanks to her powerhouse vocals. When she forcefully sings "all I want to do is love your body" and then melodically howls during the chorus, her strong voice manages to make a very tired lyric sound almost genuine. Combine this with the pulsating beats in the background it's a pleasure to listen to.
"Your Body" definitely deserves to be listened to with a good pair of headphones. You won't find anything very deep here but it's a testament to Christina's vocal talents that she sells this seemingly generic yet catchy song which would otherwise sound like filler in the hands of someone with a less capable voice. Hopefully she'll do a better job of mixing these radio friendly tunes with songs that not only showcase her voice but also give us some insight as to who she is and where she's been like she did on Stripped.
