Mary Carroll Moore demystifies the book-writing process with this essential how-to guide for writers of any skill level. "Your Book Starts Here" features Mary's unique approach to book creation along with invaluable writing exercises designed to elevate the quality of your writing - all delivered with her characteristic warmth and encouragement.

"Your Book Starts Here" offers unparalleled guidance on: building a writing practice; brainstorming content; writing scene-based islands; storyboarding within a three-act structure; stifling the inner critic; developing characters and setting; incorporating sensory details; exploring theme and so much more!

I credit "Your Book Starts Here" and the workshops and online classes I've taken with Mary for providing the inspiration, insight and supportive writing community I needed to propel me on my book-writing journey. Working through a chapter from Mary's book each week, I have discovered my writing voice and experienced a profound transformation in the quality of my writing. As a result, I'm well on my way to completing a first draft.

I highly recommend "Your Book Starts Here" for anyone who has always wanted to write a book - and those who want to raise the bar on their current or future book projects.

If you are interested in a precise and clearly written guide to learning or deepening your understanding of the craft of writing this is the book for you. It is an accessible and complete how to guide for a novice or an expert. Her book is full of anecdotes and excercises to help any writer solve any problem encountered in writing at any level. Take her book's lessons to heart, and you'll hear her clear voice, focused and compassionate asking questions, which if answered with disciplined intention lead to the appropriate answer. Moore's tone is supportive and respectful throughout this remarkable read. It's a sure footed guide through the wilderness of learning how to write well. Without this book I wouldn't have been able to write the rough draft of the novel that sits in my lap.

Your Book Starts Here by Mary Carroll Moore is filled with information, anecdotes, and exercises to help you bring out the book inside you. The author has distilled her writing and teaching experience into a step-by-step manual on novel writing. Twenty-five chapters packed with inspiration and to-do information make this book well worth the money. One of the best writing books on my shelf, and I have many. If you want to write a novel, this is the book for you!

I desperately wanted to take Mary's class in New Hampshire but hadn't been able to set aside the funds for the class, airfare, hotel, car, etc. Did have $16.95 to plunk down on the book, however. Wow! She really gives you the foundation upon which to construct your book and then provides the hammer and nails, too.

I have many writing books littering my shelves. This is one of the best.

I have bought and worked my way through many books on the writing craft, and learned a great deal from almost all of them. However, I could never find sufficient guidance on structuring my book - the how-to of putting it all together. And then this book arrived. It's a big book in every sense. But that doesn't for a moment mean it isn't highly accessible and very easy to follow. I really couldn't put it down, I was getting so many epiphanies as I read. It is such a brilliantly practical guide, setting out a step-by-step process that turns all those seemingly unlinked pieces into a coherent whole. But it's also a great source of support, giving me the sense of having an insightful mentor right at my elbow. I followed up by attending one of Mary's workshops, which are based on the book, and got even more out of the process. She is an extraordinarily gifted and generous teacher, something that comes through in both her book and her workshop. There wasn't one question or nuance about any participant's work for which she couldn't offer an instant and workable solution. I'm very grateful to have discovered this book. It's done more than any workshop to move me forward in my writing. I call it my MFA-in-a-book. I couldn't recommend it more highly as something that takes you so skillfully through the entire process. And it's up-to-the-minute with its current take on the publishing market and options for self-publishing. I'm sending copies to writer friends.

I could hardly wait when my copy of Mary Carroll Moore's newest book "Your Book Starts Here" arrived two days ago. I tore open the box from Amazon and started reading it almost before the UPS truck left our street! I have taken classes from Mary and I found the book to be an excellent resource to use to find the gaps that exist in my 73,00 word first draft of a medical memoir. Three chapters down and I find the book well laid out and easy to follow, the references to other experts in the field very useful, and the exercises targeted and reflective. There is no accident that all of the comments on the back cover and inside page are from published authors and writing instructors. She is that good. I recommend this book for someone who is starting the craft or for the experienced writer.
