Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-When Cassandra admires the beautiful, shiny buttons on her teacher's blouse, her compliment starts a chain reaction around the school. Good feelings abound as kind words and generosity get passed along to the janitor, the spelling teacher, other students, their families, and finally to Cassandra's own father, who ends up feeling so good that he brings home a kitten. Its eyes are so big and bright that the girl calls him "Buttons." Cote's beautiful acrylic, gouache, and watercolor-pencil illustrations add vibrant color and life to the double-page spreads. A few simple sentences appear on each spread and the story flows smoothly. The text itself is bold and easy to read. The multicultural cast of characters, both children and adults, is very expressive. With only slightly veiled didacticism, readers will learn that "what goes around comes around." While the book borders on being too cheerful and unrealistically sweet, children will still enjoy following the trail of this feel-good story.

From Kirkus Reviews

What goes around, comes around--literally, figuratively, every which way--in this do-good, feel-good title. Cassandra compliments her teacher on the big, glittery buttons that adorn her blouse. It makes the teacher's day, and in her sudden cheer she compliments the custodian on her work. The custodian compliments a teacher, who gives his students an early snack time, and soon good will is flying all around town, eventually right back to Cassandra: her father, after being jollied by his boss, takes pity on a stray cat and brings it home to his daughter. There is no hidden agenda here, no subtext to blur the lines. Cote's artwork is an apt display of bold colors and mile-wide smiles, a parade of cheerfulness to make readers grin as they pick up on what's happening and the speed with which it spreads. 5.0 out of 5 stars Simply charming tale of kindness, December 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: I Like Your Buttons! (Hardcover)
Children can learn than a kind word is contagious, spreading goodwill though the school and the neighborhood. Appreciating the gifts of others is an important lesson well told in this delightful book. I know good books since I'm a librarian, but the most important approval of a good story is when my 3 year-old daughter regularly selects as a good night read. This book is her latest favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read to share with kids!, April 8, 2006
Ever have a book just stick with you for years? This book is one of my all time favorites. When my kids were into picture books, I wanted to read books that I'd enjoy too, and, thanks to author Sarah Marwil Lamstein, this book fit the bill. "I Like Your Buttons" is whimsical in its flow with a well rounded cast of characters (age, gender, color...). It's a sweet story of "what goes around comes around" in the brightest sense. I love this book. It's a wonderful read to share with kids. It can open the door to all kinds of conversations, real life experiments about using kind words, and how that changes everyone's days. What if more people could catch this idea and use it? :D Enjoy!
