Book Description

February 2, 2000

Once upon a time Maggie Reid had a nice home, a rich husaband, and an adoring daughter. But that fairy-tale life hit the skids when her no-good man left her for a busty bottle blonde, and her rebellious teenage daughter went with him. Maggie's mama didn't raise no fool, though. Wide-awake and smelling the Starbucks, Maggie decides to follow her heart and becomes a country-western singer at the Golden Stallion Club.

There, she glimpses her destiny--a lanky cowboy in steel-tipped boots and tight jeans. Though she's determined to meet Marshall Weathers, she sure isn't desperate enough to kill her pesky ex-brother-in-law, Jimmy, to do it. As fate would have it, Weathers is the detective investigating Jimmy's murder, and Maggie is his leading suspect. Unless she wants to sing the prison blues, Maggie's got to do some fancy two-stepping to expose Jimmy's true killer--and find her true love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just plain fun!, June 10, 2001
This review is from: Your Cheatin' Heart: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
OK, I picked this book up on a fluke, and the plot isn't some deep psychological thriller, but I found myself reading this book and not being able to put it down. It was just a lot of fun. The characters were great and believable, and I found myself laughing out loud at some of the situations Maggie got herself into. If you want to be entertained, this is it. I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed Nancy Bartholomew's Sierra Lavotini books and Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels. If I can't put the book down, it gets 5 stars. Looking forward to the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fabulous amateur sleuth romantic tale, January 26, 2000
This review is from: Your Cheatin' Heart: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
Even when she was nine months pregnant carrying his brother's child, Jimmy Reid makes a play for his sister-in-law Maggie. She rejects him and continues to say no over the next sixteen years as he pops up at any moment, even after he marries. Her life starts to go downhill when her spouse Vernell informs her that he is leaving her for someone else. Maggie's teenage daughter Sheila decides to move in with her father and his new playmate.

Though a bit downtrodden, Maggie decides to hell with the Reids and she decides to finally follow her own dream to become a professional singer. Shockingly, she is a big success and life looks good again. However, as usual Jimmy spoils everything when he turns up dead in her kitchen. The Greensboro, North Carolina Police Department, especially Detective Marshall Weathers, believes Maggie killed Jimmy. Though he feels she is guilty, Marshall is attracted to Maggie, who returns his feelings. However, the take-charge female depends on no one and begins her own inquires as to who murdered Jimmy even though she could be the next victim.

YOUR CHEATIN' HEART is a fabulous amateur sleuth romantic tale that will make Maggie Reid and author Nancy Bartholomew household names. The story line is humorous as Maggie narrates her woes, fortunes, and more woes. Though the support cast adds depth and atmosphere to the novel, this book belongs to Maggie, who hopefully will make many more appearances in future romantic mysteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet fun book, March 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Your Cheatin' Heart: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved this book. The heroine was strong and likeable. Instead of letting herself be bullied by the people in her life -- her daughter, her ex-husband, and the policeman -- she lives life on her own terms. I also loved the supporting characters, especially Harmonica Jack who is the sweetest character. I hope this turns into a series.
