Raising healthy chickens is a new experience for most kids today. Buying a few eggs to hatch or getting a couple of cute chicks at Easter is easy, but what happens when they start to get bigger! We know they eat and poop a lot but how do we help them survive to the point where they can actually lay an egg? What do you feed them? Where do you keep them? Can a chicken really make a good pet? You'll find answers to all these and many more questions in this wonderfully written and easy to understand book about raising chickens. Gail Damerow must have raised more than just a few birds because she demonstrates a solid understanding of the common and not-so-common issues facing the rural or urban chicken farmer

My very first chickens are 2 months old now, and I've referred back to this book countless times, for help with making brooder boxes, when to remove the heat lamp, buying feeders/waterers, making our coop, treating diarrhea, when to switch feeds, how to tell a cockerel from a pullet (!), to find out if panting in 90-degree weather is normal (it is), etc., etc. It may be written for kids, but it is not condescending. I appreciate the practical and have-fun approach. I just read about the different chicken sounds, and learned that the cool sound my hens make when they're happy is called "singing." Get the book!

This book is easy to read. I thought it was helpful even for the adult beginner. A great book for a child/parent project, 4-H or school raising chicks. 4 stars because I had to explain many of the words used to my child.

My daughter has just about every page in this book marked. She loves the easy read. I love the easy read too. It helped us get started taking care of our new "pets".

This book gave me a lot of information without overwhelming me. The other books I have bought on raising chickens frightened me away with the seeming enormity of the concept...which must be pretty simple on the whole because so many people do it...this book was great!

I am a 50 year old graduate student. I can read complex textbooks, but that doesn't mean I want to. This book is perfect for the young and the old who know nothing about raising chickens. The author seemed to anticipate my every question. I learned which chickens to purchase, what supplies they'll need and how much I can anticipate spending. The author addresses everything from chicken psychology to terms we use which can be traced to our feathered friends. I also found it humorous. I bought a copy for me and another for my friend who starting raising chickens as a project with her daughter. It will be as beneficial for her 8-year old as it was for me. I finished the book this morning and now feel confident to order the necessary supplies for my soon-to-be new pet hens.

Good for kids, good for adults. Worth the money if you are thinking about raising chickens and interesting even if you are not...

I bought this for my 8 yr. old and she could not put it down. It has loads of easy to read information. I also love the book myself.

This is a great book that is fun and non technical. It is well worth the price.

I got this book for my 6 yr old son who just purchased his first show chicken. It's super informative, he's thrilled to have his own chicken book and I love the info it has. Even I'm referencing it :) Two thumbs up on this book!
