4.0 out of 5 stars Book interesting
While the book made for interesting reading (I have a 15 month son), I did not like how inflexible it came across. For example, it would say at 8 months, your baby should be doing this...If my child weren't doing whatever it was at that exact time, and I didn't know better, the book would have scared the crap out of me, making me think something was horribly wrong with...

3.0 out of 5 stars Your Child; Emotional, Behavioral & Cognitive Devel
this is a great resource especially if your children are entering or have entered the "twilight Zone" of preadolescence

Now I have not read the entire book, as I am reading it as my child grows up.

2.0 out of 5 stars Inadequate, March 12, 2003

Like so many other realms, this book lumps children who are not babies or toddlers into a huge group that includes preteens. If you have a baby, fine. Otherwise, find another more focused book for your 6 to 12 year old.

Sorry I wasted my money. I am often left unanswered.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for every parent, February 7, 2006
This review is from: Your Child: Emotional, Behavioral, and Cognitive Development from Birth through Preadolescence (Paperback)
"Your Child" truly is an essential for every home. Although written by members of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, it's parent friendly to read!

Age groups are broken down in each chapter, which I found helpful to find and very easy to use for my family.

The information I obtained and utilized was priceless. I highly recommend this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ought to be titled: How to recruit young patients for "services", June 8, 2011

This is the first of all my Amazon books that I'll be sending back. Here's why:
I have a doctorate in Developmental Psychology. There are thousands of studies and some of them are supported by evidence.
This book contains not a single reference for the many assertions made by the authors, with not a single bit of scientific or
statistical support.
Here's one example: The authors present absurd folklore about bullies:
The idea that bullies have "low self-esteem" has been throughly trashed by eminent researchers including John Rosamund and
Roy Baumeister. In fact, child bullies usually grow up to be criminals, narcisstic, entitled, and (as grandma would have said)
full of themselves.
They enjoy power over others. They think that they are smarter, more cunning and strong than all the law-abiding people around them.
They are so darn special the "rules" just don't apply to them.
If your child is a bully, what he needs is to be "over-powered" by the parents in the home while they are still bigger, and able to enforce
what they decide are fair and moral rules for living, so that the child learns that this kind of behavior is punished.
Parents also need to protect young children from themselves, by demanding behavior that is respectful to others, and enforcing this
firmly and consistently before the child enters school.
Rarely has there been a bully who wasn't trying this kind of thing as soon he could walk, hit and run.
Therapy to help grow self-esteem in bullies is like pouring gasoline on a fire. It provides wonderful training for sociopaths, as they
go on to bigger misbehavior, all while spouting pop pschology mantras to social workers and judges who send them to "counseling". And so
the fire continues, with the new ways of manipulating others becomes more sophisticated. It funds the revolving door of adolescent
"treatment" and this book is about one-third focused on "mentally disturbed" children.
If you want to know what is true and documented about children, start with anything from the Gesell Institute. And if you get a book that
sounds like it was co-authored by Oprah, send it back to Amazon quickly, before it ruins your common sense.
