Valuable insights on many levels,
By Erich Stroheim (Colorado, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How Your Child Learns Best: Brain-Friendly Strategies You Can Use to Ignite Your Child's Learning and Increase School Success (Paperback)
I wish my parents had understood some of this when I was a kid. Dr. Willis's book identifies ways to nurture the brain's natural learning abilities by tapping into your child's innate curiosity, creativity, and sense of humor. Her insights are highly useful to me even now, as an older grad student trying to organize my own learning strategies and to synthesize the relationship between research and teaching in an academic environment. Better understanding of how the brain works is also helpful in simply navigating the many levels of decision-making I encounter each day while incorporating new knowledge.

Goldie Hawn is so Right!!,

This review is from: How Your Child Learns Best: Brain-Friendly Strategies You Can Use to Ignite Your Child's Learning and Increase School Success (Paperback)
In the forward Goldie Hawn wrote for Dr. Willis" book, HOW YOUR CHIL LEARNS BEST, she said, "At last we parents now have a reference that will help guide us in assisting our children's growth and flowering. This book is what parents have been searching for and need now more than ever."
This is the book i have been searching for. My children in grades 2 and 5 were losing motivation for schoolwork each year. This book gives me so many ways to help my children understand the concepts beyond the facts with fun activities we can do at home

This book should be on every parents nightstand,
This review is from: How Your Child Learns Best: Brain-Friendly Strategies You Can Use to Ignite Your Child's Learning and Increase School Success (Paperback)
Every parent should be so lucky to have this book on their nightstand. It is truly a treasure of information and reference guide which give you the tools, inspiration and understanding in helping your child through frustrating periods of learning. My son, Andreas (7), loves the activities we've already tried, especially the dice game. He often brings me the book and asks what next we can play and learn together. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

GREAT book! Not an 8, 9, or even a 10, but a 10 PLUS!!!,
This review is from: How Your Child Learns Best: Brain-Friendly Strategies You Can Use to Ignite Your Child's Learning and Increase School Success (Paperback)
How Your Child Learns Best is a great resource of integrated information combining brain research and the best strategies to guide, coach, and enjoy partnering with your child to help him or her reach maximum learning potential and develop a joy for learning. Dr. Willis has undertaken an extremely difficult task presenting both brain and classroom research and translating the findings in a manner is invaluable for all parents.
Dr. Willis' book is unique in that it presents big ideas and strategies to promote children's "learning brains" as she emphasizes the wonderful capacities of children. The knowledge gained from this book is well worth the read and reread as your child progresses through elementary school. Dr. Willis is to be commanded for presenting the research data in a manner that is responsible and clear on what is known and what might be inferred from the findings. What we know about cognitive functions must at some point be compatible with neuroscience findings. Dr. Willis has demonstrated the compatibility of neuroscience research with strategies to promote successful learning best suited for your child's most successful learning strengths. This is a GREAT book! Not an 8, 9, or even a 10, but a 10 PLUS!!! Dr. Jules Zimmer Dean Emeritus University of California Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, Santa Barbara

This book is one of the best books to read if you have a child who struggles in school. The book reviews & explains studies about learning and then suggests ideas to help your child learn. I found this book to be full of valuable ideas that I have put into use while doing homework with my children.

Dr. Willis uses her knowledge of the brain (15 years as a board certified neurologist) to apply techniques in teaching ALL children. She currently works as a middle school teacher. This book for parents includes lots of teaching techniques that can be used at home with background information about the brain. I found it extremely interesting as well as practical.

Dr. Willis combines her expertise as a neurologist and her experience as a classroom teacher. She writes about learning in clear, accessible language.
As an educational therapist and a veteran classroom teacher , I found this book offers detailed information about the neurology of how children learn, and also contains a deep understanding of what happens in a classroom. This book is an invaluable tool for parents, and the professionals who work with children in educational settings. It will help parents understand how their child learns best.

Better School Grades,

This review is from: How Your Child Learns Best: Brain-Friendly Strategies You Can Use to Ignite Your Child's Learning and Increase School Success (Paperback)
It took Dr. Willis' traing and experience as a neurologist and a classroom teacher to provide parents like me the best ways to discover my childrens individual learning strengths and the guide me to specific strategies that work best for each of them. I like the way the book includes ways to enrich school with things we do at home, driving in the car, and at the market. My children are more attentive and participate more in their classrooms.

This book isn't very well organized. Good ideas but for the most part common sense reminders. The science is alright.
