Book Description

July 1986 0936657006 978-0936657004
In-toeing, out-toeing, flatfeet, knock-knees, bowlegs, toe-walking, sudden refusal to walk: these afflictions of childhood are so common that together, they affect all children at some time during their growth and development.

Controversy abounds regarding the causes and cure of these problems. Pediatricians, orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, grandmothers, and shoe salesmen all have strong opinions, yet all so conflicting! For any one of these problems, advice ranges from doing nothing, to wearing shoes, to wearing braces, and even to having surgery! The myths surrounding these conditions even cause professionals to be confused. What is a parent to do?

This book, written by a Harvard trained pediatric orthopedic surgeon, is an attempt to set the record straight. Writing in simple conversational style, he draws on experience and documented research findings to distinguish for the reader fact from fiction; he answers questions all parents have about their children's feet and leg problems. An especially useful chapter on shoes describes how parents should select shoes for their children.

First published in 1986, and updated in 1997, this book has helped thousands of parents and children around the world. Packed with practical information and advice, this book is a reading must for all who care about children's feet, whether parent or professional, but especially parents.

This review is from: Is Your Child Walking Right?: Parent's Guide to Little Feet (Paperback)
When my daughter was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, I was devasted! She had to wear what is called a Wheaton Harness for the first three months of her life. It was heartrenching to see her in this little contraption. But, after reading this book, I was able to better understand her 'condition' as not being life threatening and being 100% correctible as long as she was treated promptly. After many ultrasounds and wearing the harness as directed, she is now almost 4 and walks correctly and without any evidence of hip dysplasia. This book truely helped me through a tough time. It is very easy to read and understand. I highly recommend it to every parent who has to deal with this situation. It is an A+ book!
