5.0 out of 5 stars Our American Culture-Lunacy at Work, October 19, 2005
This review is from: Your Children Are Under Attack (Hardcover)
Dr. Jim Taylor has written a book that needs to be written. Parents, teachers and interested individuals need to be aware as to what our Ameican culture is doing to our children and the values that are being propogated. Dr. Taylor exposes what messages the " media " are sending. Dr. Taylor shows what values corporations in America are esposing. He knows that greed, corruption, materialism and just plain stupidity are out there on our television sets, magazines and what values permeate our culture. Taylor knows what a steady diet of The Osbournes, Friends and of course Paris Hilton will do. We all need to be aware of the messages that are sent to our children on a daily basis and how these messages influence our kids and our culture. Instead of integrity, cleavage is respected in American society. Instead of honor and truth, mascara and designer jeans are extolled as being important. More than ever, parents need to work at discussing values, things of importance and integrity with their children. Parents who do want to help raise their children should read this. Teachers who want to understand the values of their students should read this. And lastly greedy, money hungry corporate American leaders should read this and understand what their crass commercialism is doing to America.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neither right nor left wing, just anti-junk, May 4, 2005
This review is from: Your Children Are Under Attack (Hardcover)
I started Jim Taylor's book "Your Children Are Under Attack" thinking it would be along the lines of the traditional right-wing attack on pop culture as put forth by Bill O'Reilly, William J. Bennett, Jerry Falwell, etc. While fans of those writers may find common ground and reason to celebrate Taylor, there are some pretty big differences, enough so that liberals (gasp) may get plenty out of it as well.
Taylor is not really coming from a political point of view, and he is definitely not coming from a Christian point of view. He does not mention religion, nor Republicans, nor Democrats. His concern is children, only children, and what our popular culture does to children if parents don't take steps to hold it at bay and model values.
(That's right, parents, it's not enough to turn off "South Park" and say 'Don't watch that trash' to your kids. You have to walk the walk and sit down with them at dinner and be a model of adult love and responsibility.)
Taylor is intense, and not given to shades of gray "There is no more destuctive force in your children's lives than American popular culture," he writes, and he doesn't just mean Britney Spears' belly button, although that's part of it. It's the whole business model of American capitalism that sells young people crappy stuff and shallow, transient feelings, and then sells them a slightly different version of the same thing next week.
"Under Attack" can be repetitious, but a lot less repetitious than 800 million commercials for the next Fox reality show. I'll vote for Taylor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For All Parents and Anyone Who Cares for Children, September 9, 2005
This review is from: Your Children Are Under Attack (Hardcover)
Dr. Taylor's book should be required reading for anyone who cares for children of any age.

While I was previously aware of pop-culture and it's influence, this book really clarifies the true extent of how insidious our current pop-culture is and how it is literally attacking our children's values. He outlines the extent of corporate greed that markets grossly violent video games, movies, music, clothing that sexualize children, unhealthy food, etc. to our kids and how celebrities are idolized even when their behavior is horrific.

It all starts with awareness. As parents we need to be aware of the constant bombardment of our children with today's negative and greed-driven popular culture. We also need to make our children aware of it as well. This book will really do that. Dr. Taylor sets forth a clear strategy to fight back and win this war for our children's values. He stresses starting a Family Value Culture as a defense system where you live and model your family values and your children are a part of that team. He also gives clear guidance about what really works to instill the values that you want your kids to have such as compassion, honesty, love, character, integrity, and responsibility.

As parents and caregivers, by arming ourselves with knowledge, awareness and the tools set forth in this book, we can truly make a difference in our children's lives and minimize the negative effects of today's pop culture. I have already given several copies to friends and will continue to recommend it to all of the parents and caregivers I know.

Thank you, Dr. Taylor for giving us a great tool to fight back and win the war.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Call to Arms to Caregivers, Teachers, Counselors, et. al., March 15, 2005
This review is from: Your Children Are Under Attack (Hardcover)
This jeremiad is written primarily for parents and caregivers; yet it is apropos for anyone concerned for the state of the well-being of the American child today.

Dr. Taylor's razor-sharp insightful book gives the reader an inside look at all of the influences that are on the offensive against anyone who is looking out for the welfare of our future; namely physically, emotionally, and psychologically healthy children.

Point-by-searing-point he guides the reader down the rot that has eaten away at our society mores; from pop culture, to coroporate greed that finances everything from rot-gut music, to fashion that sexualizes children and fosters values that tells our kids that they "must have" everything in order to be happy, successful, fit in...you name it.

This book is a must have, must read for anyone raising a child, no matter what the age. Dr. Taylor is an important voice in the national dialogue on child-rearing that, after the publishing of this book, will have to be listened to.

Buy this book today...in fact buy two and give a copy to a friend. The future of our country depends on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The News is Grim, but There's Hope, January 24, 2006
By
Ann (Kentucky) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Your Children Are Under Attack (Hardcover)

It was 1960 on the stage of "Bye Bye Birdie" when actor Paul Lynde, playing Mr. Henry McAfee, shouted out to his audience saying, "Kids! I don't know what's wrong with these kids today!"
Toward the end of his barrage, he finally asked, "Why can't they be like we were, perfect in every way? What's the matter with kids today?"
Dr. Jim Taylor, in his book "Your Children are Under Attack: How Popular Culture is Destroying Your Kids' Values, and How You Can Protect Them," addresses this age-old question with an answer: popular culture is devastating our lives.
Video games, too much TV, corporate fraud, materialism, the inundation of information from the Internet, the unreasonable emphasis on physical attractiveness, plus the lack of physical activity leading to childhood obesity -- these are endangering our children and our culture.
Throughout the book, Taylor's theme never waivers. "The messages that American popular culture communicate to children today are in direct conflict with what is best for them," he writes. "Popular culture is now a truly counterproductive force in families' lives...."
Taylor believes that those who in past generations were institutional partners with parents such as the government, corporate America and even our schools have themselves given in to the illusory promises of instant gratification and the almighty "bottom line."
Parents are left standing alone between their children and millions of images from TV, DVDs, XBoxes, etc.
Taylor believes modern pressures lead to lazy parenting - raising children "in the most convenient way" because adults are exhausted and overwhelmed by the pace and impact of everyday life.
The message is grim, but Taylor offers hope. Taylor explains how families can make their values clear, communicate them to one another, and live discriminating lives aware yet distanced from the dangers of pop culture.
For example, he gives straight-forward language parents can use to guide their children toward making safe, sound decisions.
He also gives parents permission to say no to pop culture and to band together with those of like minds to create safe, nurturing environments for their families -- places that do not focus on self-serving ends but that foster compassion, confidence, and kindness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Radical Reformation of America's popular values, May 21, 2005
This review is from: Your Children Are Under Attack (Hardcover)
A ground breaking declaration of family and value-based parenting guide destined to be a classic.

I believe Dr. Taylor wrote this book to help us taste a new "American Value Culture" (as he describes it, based on 'our fore fathers values and principles'). It motivated me once again to reach higher levels of parenting success by arming me for battle against the beast of our culture. This book is a parents guide and preparation for a counter-attack on our culture, but with the armour of family values and character development, and love respect and inegrity.
Taylor addresses our pop-crazy society in clear and measureable terms as far as the damage it is doing to our children. We are fighting in a revolutionary war against televisoin, movies and the internet.

Do you want to protect your children from American popluar culture? Then this book is for you.

The next time you hear a parent say, "I can't begin to win the war on American Popular culture for my kids", you can say with confidence, "Read Taylor's book and you will be able to radically transform your family's values and goals". Apply this wisdom and you will be declaring victory.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!, July 11, 2005
By
Lupe (L.A., CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Your Children Are Under Attack (Hardcover)
This book is true; society does not care about the well being of our children. This is an important book that every parent must have! If we don't look after our children they are going to follow all the wrong messages society is conveying; therefore, we must filter what they watch on T.V., eat, and the list goes on and on. This book will guide you on how to adopt family principles and values.

Jim Taylor will definitely lead you to the correct path in raising a successful and respectful child.

Single mother of a 5-year-old.

This review is from: Your Children Are Under Attack (Hardcover)
Jim Taylor has done it again. His latest book, YOUR CHILDREN ARE UNDER ATTACK, is not only a compelling read but also filled with statistics, research and just plain, good sound advice that tells us today's culture is toxic for our children's moral growth. But what makes Taylor's book especially profound is that he offers doable ways to help parents take back the control of our children's lives and make sure we do plant the kinds of values that will help them become compassionate, humane, and ethical individuals (despite the popular culture). I highly recommend this book (as well as the author's previous work, Positive Pushing). Bothshould be on every parents' nightstands these days.
