5.0 out of 5 stars If You Have Children, You Must Read This Book
I appreciated the valuable information about brain development, how children learn, how we can help them, what real education and learning are all about, and the things we do that hinder brain development.
I assigned it to my teens for part of the homeschooling program, and they enjoyed it so much they recommend it to friends, too.

3.0 out of 5 stars an average book on what should be an interesting topic
As a critical reader, I found this book to be a dull, unpleasant read. It begins as a combination of conclusory assertions and opinions and useless anatomy lessons. Sentences start with "research has shown" or "I believe" but the author doesn't describe the research or the basis of her beliefs. This makes for an uninteresting, unengaging book. And since parents don't...

Jane Healy writes well, and she makes a lot of sense. Reading this book also helped us understand why one of our children has some of the learning issues she has. I just can't recommend it highly enough.

This literally spells out what's going on in those little brains. Full of great advice on parenting and supporting young learners--and letting your child show YOU how they need to learn. I wish there'd been a bit more about the developing adolescent brain. You can't start reading this book too early.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, January 30, 2010
This review is from: Your Child's Growing Mind: Brain Development and Learning From Birth to Adolescence (Paperback)
After enjoying Endangered Minds years ago as part of a developmental psychology class, I am now a parent myself and was anxious to read this book. I feel this book provides accessible neuroscience for caregivers who want to understand how brain development progresses and what a growing mind NEEDS as it matures. Ms. Healy provides a lot of practical information and tips, based on research and her experience as a learning specialist, for what we can do to provide the best environment and stimuli for our children's learning at the various stages. For instance, my husband now understands that our baby needs lots of physical and sensory play at this stage of his life - his brain simply isn't ready to "read" or participate in the type of learning that some programs advocate to help one's child get a leg-up on schooling. I would recommend this book to anyone who participates in the care of children. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Return to Common Sense, December 31, 2009
This review is from: Your Child's Growing Mind: Brain Development and Learning From Birth to Adolescence (Paperback)
I suppose on one hand it's sad that we need books like this, but we are all at some level a victim of the public education system. So when all of these fads and learning cures pop up, people rush to buy them and torture their children with them. The authors of this book explain how the mind works and learns, often in ways that all the junk you are buying for your children are completely incompatiable with. Teaching children comes down to simple things like talking and reading to them, allowing them to play and explore and treating them like humans, not computers. They are hard-wired to learn in what are very simple ways. For more on common sense for parents and kids, see Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder and Einstein Never Used Flash Cards: How Our Children Really Learn-- And Why They Need to Play More and Memorize Less.

I love to learn about the mind and how it influences children of all ages. This book really has given me up to date information to help me relate to my children, as well as the preschool children I teach. I would highly recommend this book to any person ready to learn about the mind of children and how to relate to them in a postive way.

I ordered this book primarily because I was looking for information on the best way to assess and encourage brain development in my infant. It has a lot of good information on things like what kind of activity, interaction and play is helpful for brain development and what is not. It also has good information about benchmarks of development for different ages/stages. This is a great reference for parents who really want to understand their child's brain development and create a brain-rich environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic for Parents and Teachers, May 27, 2005
This review is from: Your Child's Growing Mind: Brain Development and Learning From Birth to Adolescence (Paperback)
I am the proud author of this new edition of Your Child's Growing Mind, which is completely revised and updated with all the newest brain research and the applications for teaching and parenting. I am only sorry that Amazon has not included all the fantastic reader comments that accompanied the book before the new edition came out--it is still the same great resource. Enjoy!

This review is from: Your Child's Growing Mind: Brain Development and Learning From Birth to Adolescence (Paperback)
After reading a number of neuroscientific based books, I rounded out my self-directed exploration of the brain with this masterpiece by Jane Healy, Ph.D. It simply is simply the ultimate guide for understanding how the minds of children - from infants to teenagers - grow, change, and develop.

Yes, it has the neuroscientific jargon that you would expect from any credible book that endeavors to explain the complexities of the brain and it's neural functions and networks, but what you don't expect is for it to be so abundant with sound advice (backed by research of course) about how to logically, and lovingly raise children to maximize their intellectual capacities, and reach their full potential in ways that are best for them; all in accordance to their individual rate of growth.

Reading this book will enable you to look into the mind of your child (or children) and identify, and understand their thought process. Her take-away message is clear: pay attention to your child, follow their lead, and gently guide them with interactivity, play, and lot's of love. This book should be required reading for all parents, and parents-to be.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I read it the month before my first child was born. It is full of suggestions on how to approach educating your child. It's mostly what should be common sense, but mostly, it says be loving and attentive, and nature will take it's course. You can't force your child to be intelligent, but intelligent child need to be nurtured with love and attention to blossom. If you keep your child warm and safe and let them be children, that's all they need to develop.
