About the Author

Jill has been working with children for a LONG time.  She is an occupational therapist and a mother of three children- two boys and a girl.  The two younger children are girl boy twins, so she had a unique opportunity to watch development evolve from both the female and male perspectives.  Jill juggled her career as a working mother, balancing soccer, dance and music  schedules with a private practice and consulting.

Jill has been helping parents and educators understand the many concepts of sensory motor development.  This process affects not only motor skills but the emotional well being of the child and the ability to organize and attend to the world as well.

Jill Mays has created a very informative, practical book for parents and educators that explains the mystery of motor development in the young child. She uses case studies from her experience as an occupational therapist to show that improving a child's motor skills can enhance their emotional well-being. Jill explains the progression of skills in an easy to understand format and supplies a list of recommended activities following the description of each important skill. Bold color photographs of children in motion highlight each page. Skills range from the early reflexes in the infant to crawling, standing and walking. For the older child, coordinated movements are discussed that are required for throwing, swinging, swimming, writing and riding a bike. A final chapter is included on choosing the right sport for you child based on his strengths. This book will be an invaluable resource through the child's early years and a perfect gift for the new parent.

As both a parent and Occupational Therapist, I can't recommend this book enough!! Jill Mays provides the perfect balance of information and activities. It is never preachy, but told in a voice that is reassuring, easily understandable and makes so much practical sense. And it is all applicable to everyday lives. When you want to understand development and support your child's growth, or have a child with some developmental issues it is hard to find resources that are a fit for your child's needs or your life; Jill Mays has done just that. The range of issues and activities she describes to foster development is incredibly comprehensive and most importantly doable within our incredibly busy lives. Great, great book!
