Book Description

May 1997
Your Complete Guide to Money Happiness, offers a profusion of genuine insights that will become more valuable with time. In an easy-to-read, engaging and straight-forward style, Henry S. Brock delivers a compelling presentation of the original and time-tested formula for financial success and security. Unlike the usual financial planning manual which merely focuses on strategies and tactics, Money Happiness first lays the enduring foundation of correct principles against which any strategy or tactic may be measured. Within this framework, Brock reveals with remarkable clarity why so many financial self-help books fall short of helping you find lasting solutions to financial challenges. By examining those principles that worked yesteryear, today, and that will work in the years of economic commotion ahead, you will discover how to discern sense from nonsense, fundamentals from fads, and facts from fiction as promoted in the financial press. These principles will be just as applicable to the economy in the year 2025 as they are today. As a benchmark, these principles are than applied as Money Happiness discusses over 300 financial strategies and tactics. Contemporary issues are discussed so you know how to survive and prosper within the modern maze of government economic and tax policies, investment markets, complex financial products, and increasing globalization. Through this unique synthesis of principles, strategies and tactics, you will gain the power and skills to simplify your life and improve your Money Happiness beyond what you ever dreamed possible. Practical strategies, proven techniques, trusted wisdom. Unsurpassed - no other money management book comes close.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Brock sets out to show the relationships among such basic goals as happiness, freedom, security, success, and money. The fundamental guidelines that he employs to achieve those goals are what he terms "pillars" or "timeless principles." They include making decisions by happiness criteria, not ego criteria; focusing on freedom and respecting and valuing it; understanding that character is the foundation of all money happiness; and preparing for security by building a solid foundation to realize it. He adds another pillar, that of climbing the right ladder to success by doing something you love, focusing on the result, and simplifying yourself and your needs. His final pillar is understanding that having a vision, a purpose, is the key to success. In reviewing all aspects of financial planning within the context of these pillars, the author teaches us that earning and managing money cannot be separated from the rest of life. Mary Whaley

Review

Henry Brock here presents an avuncular mix of financial planning, socio-economic theory and lectures on character building. His advice, in brief, is work hard; think positive; save; don't borrow; don't lend; buy insurance; watch out for taxes; and hurrah for free enterprise. The financial advice explains the power of compound interest and the benefits of integrating life insurance, etc. into your financial planning. There is also significant discussion of estate tax planning methods (although not incorporating the latest changes). He gears his advice towards the already or potentially wealthy - for example he describes a $600,000 estate as "very modest." Unfortunately, he slights financial topics such as limited liability companies, which are not even mentioned, to make room for the author's opinions on character, society and politics - all of which leave much to be desired. The author sets forth the traditional Protestant work ethic supported by numerous quotations from Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, etc. Even if you agree with him, the presentation is shallow and better said elsewhere. As to his socio-economic theory, it is a mixture of truths, half-truths, contradictions, and downright misstatements. Beware questioning him, however, for he warns his readers that he bases his opinions on natural laws and that they will be challenged by "communists and fatalists" and other "closed organizations" using "sophisticated" arguments. "Sophisticated" is bad because it is etymologically related to sophistry. In reality both words come from the Greek "sophos" meaning wisdom, and wisdom, unlike the author's view of the world, is complicated, convoluted and onderfully complex. My recommendation is that you read Franklin, Lincoln, Shakespeare, the Bible, et al. for yourself and talk to a financial planner directly if you are in the income levels assumed in this book. -- From Independent Publisher

Most financial planners present and promote a single strategy: Brock's provides a foundation of basic financial principles and reveals why other financial planners often don't work. Over 300 financial strategies and techniques are covered in a guide which thoroughly explains both the economic and social foundations of financial satisfaction and planning. -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars One of two books EVERYONE needs to read for $$$ success., September 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Your Complete Guide to Money Happiness (Hardcover)
Before reading "Money Happiness" first read "The Millionaire Next Door" to help you better understand what a millionaire looks like and what actions help you become rich. Then, read "Money Happiness" and refer to it constantly. Henry Brock shows tried and true methods for success in financial planning, estate planning, and goal setting. His techniques are proven. There are no flimsy gimmicks that many unqualified authors are proposing today. This man knows his stuff. His discussion on Variable Life Insurance vs. mutual funds is something that everyone should know. His asset allocation chapter shows that you don't have to be a stock picker to be successful. THIS MAY BE ONE OF THE BEST OVERALL FINANCIAL BOOKS AVAILABLE. IT IS MORE USEFUL THAN A FINANCIAL DEGREE, BECAUSE YOU CAN PUT IT IMMEDIATELY INTO ACTION!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice elegant book for people in debt!, February 4, 1999

This review is from: Your Complete Guide to Money Happiness (Hardcover)
I really loved this book. I'm slowly enjoying more of his passages. Don't try to read it all at once because of the number of pages. Just think of a question and then open a chapter. You will get answers to solve your financial challenge. One may imagine reading this book in hard times. I liked the author's personal experiences within this book. It's worth buying and reading. My wife likes this book as well. Great book for people in debt!
