WWI was a disastrous event in European History; yet today almost 100 years later we are still fixated on a crusade mentality. The language is a bit dated, but in general this work is a time capsule into the early anti- socialist movement in America. Sen. Lindbergh, the aviator's father, demonstrates amazing mental acuity that would be incomprehensible to the population today. He sees that our entry into WWI was almost entirely motivated by profiteering. "Spreading democracy" was just an ideological veneer designed to make it look like a holy cause. He writes as if the average citizen were not a fool. He reasons with us: how un-modern.
It's intellectual work like reading an old newspaper; but worth it to the occasional History student who wonders about what actually happened.
Lindbergh, a conservative, does not confuse money and power with conservatism.

This book is fascinating in that if you didn't know anything about this book, the reader would think he or she was reading about politics and banking in our present time. I believe there are two reasons for this. One is human nature doesn't change, and two being the same money power that controlled politics back then still controls things today. I mean why kill the goose that keeps laying golden eggs. There is great wisdom in this book, however I gave it only 3 stars because I think The Economic Pinch by Lindbergh is a better book about the same theme.

Just to give a short excerpt from this book: "There is a sinister influence at work in our country, which if it is not checked, intends to completely undermine the original purpose of the formation of our government...and to bring all the world into one control and one system, which for purposes of deception of the plain people, they would call a "world democracy", but which in fact it is their plan to make the rule of the wealth grabbers, maintained by simple organization of themselves and disorganization of the masses, pitting the masses against each other... The few now desire to cut off every possible avenue of escape from industrial slavery for the masses.
