5.0 out of 5 stars Wisdom to Meditation to Creativity to Commitment, July 29, 2008
By
This review is from: Your Daily Walk with The Great Minds: Wisdom and Enlightenment of the Past and Present (2nd Edition) (Spiritual Dimensions Series) (Paperback)
Richard A Singer, Jr. has found a way to guide everyone fortunate enough to read his book YOUR DAILY WALKS WITH THE GREAT MINDS to a life of contemplation and enrichment, not by seeking out seminars throughout the world, but instead by relying on time alone with his secure companionship of selected words and accompaniments. He quietly and gently supports our capacity to improve our physical and spiritual lives while at the same time sharing words on a daily basis from famous thinkers that expand our survey of history and appreciation for the human spirit.

Singer draws brief but significant single sentence quotes from a wide range of people - from famous physicians such as William Osler and Freud, to news commentators like Dan Rather, to painters like Van Gogh and Picasso, scientists like Einstein, philosophers like William James and Nietzsche, composers such as Beethoven, writers like Henry James, poets like Emerson, Whitman and Frost, and the many inspirational voices of the past like Gandhi, MLK, JFK, and Mother Theresa. Opening each day's 'walk' with such a thought, Singer then offers a related meditational though, follows that with instruction to enter our responses in a journal, and then extracts a pledge from this exercise to make a difference in our own lives and in the global community.

Self-help books are many: some are trendy and some are timeless. This little portable volume is one that will last far beyond the year that it is chronicled to accompany. Once again Richard Singer extends a firm and wise hand to increase our awareness of the past, our place in the present, and our choices for a future, richer because of the time we have spent with his generous spirit. Grady Harp, July 08

5.0 out of 5 stars A Program for an Exciting Life Journey, July 22, 2006
Richard Singer is a genius at adapting a profound quote from a well known thinker of the past into a challenge, an inspiration, a motivation, and a source for contemporary personal application. Arranged as a program for daily reading, each meditation allows the reader the opportunity to gain knowledge, insight and understanding to change.

Richard than provides thought provoking questions for reflection, contemplation, and action. These questions become the basis for a personal journal that will enable the reader to assimilate and internalize these principles, to consider a higher calling to live life with an intense constancy of purpose and a sense of fulfillment.

An example of quotes found in the book is one by Richard Singer himself:
"There are three gifts you can give on a daily basis that will eventually transform all of creation; they are love, compassion, and kindness."

Richard had provided a book of the month suggestion. I plan to incorporate these books as must reading for the year ahead. I personally was challenged to live in the present moment, with a combination of determination, persistence, and patience.

This is more than a self help, motivational or inspirational book. It is a program for a changed life. I highly recommend it for anyone wants to move beyond mediocrity and to experience a more fulfilling, meaningful, and purposeful life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book to Change the Way You Think, February 19, 2007
By
EAndrew (Pennsylvania, USA) - See all my reviews
Richard Singer's book "Your Daily Walk with the Great Minds of the Past and Present" will definitely change the way you look at life and become the person you were sent down here to be.
What can you look forward to when you get this book? The book is broken down into daily assignments...you read a quote from one of the great minds, then a short paragraph to guide you on your day along with a mind searching question which you answer. This short daily time enables you to gradually change your mindset and I have found that I think about my daily question and answer all day. I have a small notebook I take along with me and have all my short daily thoughts written down...which helps me keep the concepts I have learned so far fresh in my mind.
Another good thing is that Richard gives you a monthly reading assignment...a book written by a great mind, past and present. Having the whole month to read the assignment enables you to absorb the information.
I am gradually changing the way I look at my life and people around me have started noticing a change...more positive, more hopeful, more grateful to the abundance that I do have in my life...even if right now it's not the monetary abundance...but I am now hopeful and positive that that too will change very soon.
Thank you Richard...you have written a book that everyone can handle gradually...so even those who say "I have no time to read" can do this and will gradually want to read more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Concept with Practical Applications, June 5, 2006
Quote for June 5: "Every burden is a blessing." ~Robert Shuller

Spiritual growth seems more accessible with a place to record insights and relax into thoughts of a transforming nature. Richard A. Singer Jr. has collected a world of quotes and combined them with his thoughts on the subjects presented.

Meditation: "Life is crammed with adversity of all intensities and kinds. These trying times are parts of life when we truly grow and illuminate the unborn spirit within us. Take a step back and be grateful for these opportunities to truly evolve into who you are..."

There is also a place where you can write personal insights in a "personal journal section" on each page.

Personal Journaling: "How will you begin to truly embrace and realize the meaning and worthwhile experience available in every challenge in your life?"

About one third of the page has lines where you can write your thoughts. The topics cover everything from success to the beauty of silence. Quotes range from the words of spiritual teachers like Dr. Wayne Dyer to the thoughts of financial gurus like Donald Trump.

Your Daily Walk with the Great Minds of the Past and Present is a perfect gift any time of the year. Whether you are buying this for yourself or for someone you wish to inspire, Richard A. Singer's book presents intellectual and spiritual considerations for an entire year of personal growth.

Richard A. Singer Jr. is a psychotherapist living in the Cayman Islands and his writing has also been included in "Chicken Soup for the Recovering Soul." He enjoys spending time at the beach writing beautiful thoughts and wrote this book based on his own experiences and challenges.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different method, June 4, 2006
Mr. Singer's book offers his readers a most relative and simplistic way of making positive changes in their lives. He uses a daily combination of modeling, meditation and journaling that does not require an enormous amount of time.

Mr. Singer has done a wonderful job in creating a tool that anyone can use and enjoy to enhance their lives. He did exceptionally well choosing some of the wisest minds of our time for his models. Mr. Singer has found a unique way of using the wise words of these models to lead the reader into daily meditation and journaling.

Richard A. Singer is a practicing psychotherapist living in the Cayman Islands. He is formerly of Pennsylvania and has a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology. His daily inspirations have been included as part of Chicken Soul, from the best selling Chicken Soup series. His own recovery from addiction impassioned him to help others find courage, determination and peace, and has made what some would call "work" the love and purpose of this life. To learn more about Mr. Singer, visit his Web site www.yourdailywalk.org.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a tool to better their life.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Read, August 14, 2011
This review is from: Your Daily Walk with The Great Minds: Wisdom and Enlightenment of the Past and Present (2nd Edition) (Spiritual Dimensions Series) (Paperback)
If a reader is in need of quiet contemplation and inspirational passages this is the book for him/her! Each passage in the year contains a quote, meditation piece, and a personal journaling query or suggestion. These are actually very good pieces, the reader will be able to infer that an extensive amount of thought was put into selecting just what to put down.

There is also a passage labelled " A Conversation with Rick Singer." This passage contains questions and answers that a reader may wonder after completing the first half of the book; for instance, why did Mr. Singer decide to write this book and what did he hope people would get from reading it? The book also contains an index with a complete list of the people who stated the quotes in the book for the reader's reference. This book is recommended for people who enjoy self-help nonfiction.

Mr. Singer has captured the quintessence of humanity in his book, Your Daily Walk with the Great Minds of the Past and the Present. Its fundamental nature is inspiring and defies the mind to explore unfathomable levels. Each day is comparable to a new sunrise as one works through the quote, meditation, and personal journaling sections. Mr. Singer, through this ingenious text, has presented to mankind an avenue for "creating immortal footprints in the sand." (Man's Search for Meaning, Victor Frankl)

4.0 out of 5 stars more than just reading, March 27, 2006
Your Daily Walk is not an ordinary compilation of quotations from notable minds throughout history. It also facilitates the process of modeling these quotes, meditating on their meaning for your life, journaling your thoughts and visualizing the living practice of this accumulated wisdom in daily doses.

Author Richard Singer starts each month with a book recommendation as an added resource to be read during that month. Each day of the year has been given its own page with its own quote and added thoughts to meditate on that bring the quote to life. The rest of the page is open for journalling your thoughts, plans, whatever comes to mind. Singer then encourages the reader to visualize the application of this wisdom in his/her life.

Your Daily Walk not only sparks thought, but also provides a forum for the reader to express that thought and explore many different ways of applying that wisdom to their daily life. Even on February 29 - a very thoughtful touch!
