"Authoritative, clear, empathic, structured, and evidence based, the second edition of Your Defiant Child surpasses the first, which is no easy feat. A 'must read' for parents worried about a child's oppositional, aggressive, or defiant behavior."--Stephen P. Hinshaw, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of California, Berkeley

"Dr. Barkley is a leader in the field who provides families with proven strategies for dealing with very challenging problems. The entire book reflects his research, experience, and wisdom. The book is informed by feedback from the many parents who have benefited from this approach, and includes practical examples and pointers for putting the techniques into action."--Charles E. Cunningham, PhD, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, McMaster University, Canada

"Dr. Barkley provides sound advice for parents based on many years of research. This is a well-written, easy-to-follow guide for improving your child's behavior."--Rex L. Forehand, PhD, coauthor of Parenting the Strong-Willed Child

I agree with the reviewer above that the book is heavy on practical advice, backed up with research (which is important to me). I found it helpful for my situation, but not the best book I have read. I think the book is basically aimed at parents with a young school-aged child (K-3, maybe), with ADHD and defiance, and no other significant issues. Anyone else will be tweaking the content pretty much, but it's still good information.

To summarize the content, Barkely recommends that you begin by spending positive time with your child (15 minutes, basically every day). He gives concrete suggestions for how to do this, even if it seems impossible right now. He directs parents to implement only this one change for the first week, and to keep it up, basically, forever.

The second week, he guides the reader in setting up a system to reinforce the desired behaviors. He uses a token system. Some younger kids might struggle with that, but he does give a few tips on how to address that difficulty. I think most kindergarteners could catch on. Younger kids, I don't know.... I like that the kids are basically being asked to do the same things you would ask of any child. Then you set up the pricing guide so that they use most (about 2/3) of their points to buy things that most kids get for free. So it's not a cushy bribe, it's just the old method of taking privileges away, turned on it's head.

Then he begins to guide the parent through a series of steps to implement fairly mild, very consistent consequences for misbehavior. The consequences consist of losing the points they gained for doing the right things (above), and time out.

I have read several other books that speak to this topic. Most were heavy on descriptions and light on actual practical advice. This book lays out very straight-forward steps, that the author - a PHD - says have been tried and refined on thousands of families -- and that it has been highly successful. I am only on week/step 2. So I cannot say whether I am a success yet. But it sure feels right. All of it feels like this just might be it. Thank you, Russel A. Barkley.

Great book if you follow it. It's a difficult book to follow, but it has great results if you go step by step and week by week. My son's behavior has improved dramatically thanks to the advice in the book!!

I really enjoyed this book and found it very useful. The author talked about defiant children and really described much of the behavior I experience with my youngest child who is 4. It really helped me understand her better and also why we were having some of the challenges in our family that we were.

We have been using the program for about a month now and it has been fairly effective. One of the big topics of this book is a reward system and that has been very useful for some aspects of our life (toileting, eating, cleaning, and sleeping). We still have some struggles that the reward system has been less helpful with (aggression and volume control are still big problems).

I loved the set up of the book and really appreciated the answers to common questions. I would actually have liked to see just a little bit more of those. I think they were the most helpful part of the book.

I felt like after reading the book I understood the issues we have better and that alone made it worth the read. Also, the steps described have made a difference in our lives. Understand though that the book can’t work miracles either though and that even after completely incorporation the measures in this book you may not have a fully compliant child.

This book emphasized positive changes that you can make at home, everyday, to help your defiant child. It was easy to ready and flowed nicely.
