The Champ and Panama Jackson of the VerySmartBrothas.com go all the way in for their first book, "Your Degrees Won't Keep You Warm A Night: The Very Smart Brothas Guide to Mating Dating and Fighting Crime." It's like getting advice from your older brother's ignorant best friend.

Champ and Jackson are wickedly brilliant, and they force women (and men) to take a look at the deranged things we do in the name of love, sex, and relationships. They are the Phonte Colemans of relationship blogging: they talk about relationships from a black male perspective in ways that aren't condescending (Steve Harvey) or panty-pandering (Hill Harper). They just keep it honest.

You could literally choose any page out of the book and fall into the funny. One of the best parts of the book are the footnotes, which are like little pieces of food that get stuck in your teeth that you find later in the day (and secretly satisfy your hunger for more). I feel like if I had footnotes like this:

"I've been trying to figure out the mixture of smells that contributes to the SCOO {Strip Club Odd Odor}, and I've come to realize that it's a combination of ass sweat, recycled bacon grease, Nair, MD 20/20, old pennies, Bath & Body Works' Cucumber Melon Fragrance Mist, more ass sweat, and struggle. -T.C. "

...I might have paid more attention in my college history classes.

My only complaint? My favorite post about the virtues of Erykah Badu's unexpected thickness aren't included, but I'm sure the Brothas had enough material for four books. Your degrees won't keep you warm at night, but if you follow the common sense in this book I'm sure you'll find someone who can.

I love this book, it is enjoyable, eye-opening, and FUNNY! There is nothing like a book that will literally make you laugh out loud. Matters of the heart are often challenged and confused by matters of the mind, and it is nice to get an alien perspective of things (I kid).

As funny as this book is, there are real truism discussed. Love is NOT like the movies, and the sooner we move away from that, the sooner we can get to what love is about, which will be different from person to person.

Get the book, it talks about experiences that every person has had, both good and bad.

The Champ and Panama are both great writers and offer a fresh and witty look at love, dating, relationships, and what men are really thinking. I've been a fan of their blog for years and was very excited when I found out a book was coming out. I loved the book! I've read many relationship books, but this one stands out for being so well-written, funny, and insightful at the same time. I literally couldn't put this book down.It was also laugh out loud funny (especially the footnotes) and tears were literally coming down.

Doing "hood-rat stuff with your friends" is fun. But for those of you lacking in the friends-with-some-sense department, there's Your Degrees Won't Keep You Warm at Night: The Very Smart Brothas Guide to Dating, Mating and Fighting Crime.

Your Degrees isn't the latest literary money pit for pitiful women looking to "find, keep and understand a man." Instead, the book, which reads more like a "best of" blog series (in a good way), is a case study in new-millennium mating for like-minded folk who live near a metro. It's playful without being patronizing.

In 30 chapters with titles like, "The Tenets of Grown-ass-ness," "Love Actually ... Sucks" and "The Do's and Don'ts of Breaking Up," Young and Jackson make an excellent case for common sense when dealing with the opposite sex from both sides of the aisle. "Every grown-ass sista should at least have one *heterosexual!* male in her life that'll give it to her straight with no chaser," explains the Champ. Steve Harvey allusions aside, he's obviously right. Another universal law of attraction goes something like, "You already know the truth, but somehow hearing it come out of a deep voice helps." It's like the Great Oz phenomenon of fornication.

"Young and Jackson" sounds like a detective show set in 1970s Detroit. I picture the authors fighting crime with functional but revolutionary-appropriate Afros, red leather trench coats and black mock turtlenecks. They say things like, "You've just been close-bused, sucka" (page 113) or, "Take those 'work googles' off before you go home with the elevator operator ... sucka!" (page 63).

In the series finale, though, beneath the one-liners and leather armor, both guys have a lot of heart: "Most men aren't scared of commitment and we actually welcome it. We're just scared to death of committing to the wrong person. Big difference."

I saw all of the rave reviews and wondered if I was reading the same book. Many of the insights in this book are just plain common sense, presented in a whimsical manner. I realize that everyonone's tastes are different; however, I thought many of the attempts at humor were dry. It appears to me that the author's plugged in a large amount of rhetoric in each chapter to reach the length required for a book.

In all honesty, it is difficult to give this book a positive rating.

LOVED every bit of this book. Since this is a relationship-centric book, it is bound to be compared to the Steve Harveys of the world (hell, I even included a play on it in the title), but the way this one book is difference from many male-perspective relationship books is that this isn't to necessarily tell you how to PLAY the relationship game it pretty much lays out how relationship game for ya. It's like a Mortal Kombat cheat code book. I mean, women ask all the time for the male perspective and Damon (The Champ) and Panama Jackson gives us just that. With the key ingredient of course: humor. I think with any discussion as incendiary as relationship discussions humor is needed. I truly think it is the universal language amongst the sexes. And Damon's fabulous witticisms ("p*nis politician" is the best thing ever, I've convinced) plus Panama's hilarious pop culture references (seriously, it's like a game in and of itself hunting for them! lol) definitely make for a delectable humor feast.

I highly recommend this book if you want a fresh, funny, and fantastic take on men/women from two very smart brothas.
