I have found this to be one of the most informative and easy to read Diabetes book for athletes. It helped me discover how my blood sugars were effected by certain activities and being able to predict lows better. Some really valuable knowledge here! It also gave me more confidence in doing more strenous activity and not fearing a severe low.

Are you aware of how you learn best? Many times our best learnings stem from a series of "experiments." Your Diabetes Science Experiment: Live Your Life with Diabetes, Instead of Letting Diabetes Live your Life by Ginger Vieira, is based on the premise that trial and error scenarios paired with data tracking can help you eliminate the guessing game of diabetes care.

The book is written by power lifter Ginger Vieira, who has had type 1 diabetes for over 25 years. She guides the reader from a place of understanding the challenges of managing diabetes...which she no doubt does. She believes that there is a reason behind every blood glucose result. With this knowledge she has been able to remove her feelings of anger, frustration, or discouragement with her numbers. Viera seeks to teach you to do the same and provides support to accomplish this throughout her book.

Vieira creates logical dialogue from page one. She is intent on educating the reader. To accomplish this she uses everyday scenarios to explain, for example, how the body works with type 1 diabetes. She returns many times to a central example: the body as a pizza shop. Sounds funny, but it works! From insulin and body weight, to various case studies with an extensive cast, she explains each situation to unmask the mystery of diabetes.

Viera believes Your Diabetes Science Experiments can be created around any time of day or situation where you experience of unwanted high or low blood glucose results. She notes every high or low number isn't good, bad, or even perfect. It's all just information to input into your ongoing science experiment: YOU.

The book provides the author's personal results and details her diabetes experiments and results for various situations.

I take my hat off to Ginger Vieira. As an author myself (on the very subject of diabetes), and a fellow type 1 diabetic for many years, I know how difficult it is to truly explain the science behind the illness, and at the same time motivate and encourage people to take care of themselves, despite the overwhelming and time-consuming issues we, as diabetics, have to live with every day.

Vieira's book is an incredibly well researched, easy to follow book. Most importantly it includes the author's own experiments she, like many diabetics, has to perform on her own body in order to determine how and why it acts the way it does - all in order to live a healthy and fulfilled life, despite the obstacle that is type 1 diabetes.

In the book Vieira explains what happens to our bodies as diabetes takes a hold. She uses great and simple imagery (using pizza of all things!) to illustrate the science behind it, and what we have to do in order to take our lives back. She takes control of her diabetes by determining to find out WHY her sugars are not always where they should be. To her, unexplained lows and highs ALWAYS have a reason, and should be looked at in order to find the culprit. She does not give up or allows herself to be passive when it comes to controlling her blood sugar.

Vieira encourages us to take that same control of our bodies. She explains how to do your own experiments to determine why our sugars may be off at certain times. I have innately done the same over the years, but there were many times I just gave up. Vieira's words have motivated me again to try harder and not give up. Just because I know what to do doesn't mean I always do it. Vieira, on the other hand, does. And we all can do it too.

This book is a very thorough explanation of diabetes in layman's terms, a motivational tool, a reference, a how-to guide, and in general an inspirational read. I highly recommend it to all diabetics!

This book is very good at explaining the concepts behind controlling blood sugars for type 1 diabetics. Around 30% of the information presented would be useful to type 2 diabetics, but there are probably other books that are better suited to type-2s.

Having done the DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) course, I feel that this book covers much of the same ground, but then takes diabetes management to another level. Although I have reasonably good control of my type 1 diabetes, I feel that it will only improve having read this.

There are numerous grammar and punctuation errors that will hopefully be corrected in future editions, but despite this, it is still an easy read and the information presented appears to be factual. I've recommended it to others who have similarly found it beneficial.

What I would like to see in a future edition are:

All BG readings presented in both the American format of mg/dL and the non-American measurement of mmol/L. Constantly converting values from the American format to the format I am used to became quite draining.
Notes of exceptions to the rule. E.g. Ginger states that to obtain the total carbs in a meal, dietary fibre needs to be deducted from the total carbs. This is the case in the US, but is not the case in Australia (and other countries) where dietary fibre has already been removed from the total carbs value on a nutrition panel.

Overall. this is the most helpful book I have found on helping me to manage type 1 diabetes. Highly recommended.
