5.0 out of 5 stars they're getting to be a habit with me, January 18, 2009

This review is from: In Your Dreams (Audio CD)
In Your Dreams features the talents of Christine Ebersole and Billy Stritch. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is beautiful. Christine can take a song and easily make it all her own with her terrific interpretation of a ballad; and Billy accompanies her very well, too. Some people may well say--and they have a point--that these songs have been done too many times before; but these ballads are in the "American Songbook" and therefore it's great to hear people paying tribute and attention to them in our times.

"Fine and Dandy" starts the CD off with a very cabaret styled arrangement; Billy and Christine sing this very well--they harmonize beautifully and that's grand. Billy also plays the piano flawlessly and they never miss a beat on "Fine and Dandy." I have never heard this song before but it's full of pep and quite catchy, too. "Nobody Else But Me" again showcases Billy's talents as he both sings and plays piano; and "Nobody Else But Me" is easily a highlight of this album. Great! Similarly, "The Surrey With The Fringe On The Top" was always one of my very favorite classic pop tunes; and just one listen will tell you why it's so very special even today. It's wonderful to hear Billy and Christine harmonize as they deliver "The Surrey With The Fringe On The Top" without a single superfluous note.

"The Folks Who Live On The Hill" gets a very sensitive treatment from Christine and Billy; and listen for "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me." "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me" charms me with its beauty and I could never tire of hearing this tune. Christine and Billy make "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me" another major highlight of this CD. There are also two very classic, older tunes that still shine bright, "We're In The Money" and "Lullaby Of Broadway." "Lullaby Of Broadway" has quite a fine arrangement and I think you'll enjoy it very much. Christine never sounded better.

"Can't Help Lovin' That Man of Mine" is a stunning love ballad that will always be timeless; and they play with the key modulations and tempo a bit to put their own stamp on this ballad. "There's a Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon For New York" comes from Porgy and Bess if I recall correctly; and wow, how Christine Ebersole and Billy Stritch perform this with panache! The CD ends strong with Christine and Billy performing a great medley of "Put Your Dreams Away / Hit The Road To Dreamland / It's a Pity To Say Goodnight." This is one splendid ending for this album!

I highly recommend this CD for fans of Billy Stritch and Christine Ebersole; and people who like classic pop vocals will love this, too. There's a good amount of cabaret styled music on this album; and if you like this CD you may also want to try the CD entitled Sunday In New York by these two artists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ms. Ebersole is a triumph, January 21, 2005
This review is from: In Your Dreams (Audio CD)
I first caught Christine Ebersole at the Papermill Playhouse in NJ where she played the lead role in MAME, and her many guest appearances on THE ROSIE O'DONNELL SHOW. Christine Ebersole went on to win a Tony for her featured work in the hit revival of 42ND STREET. She teams up with co-star Billy Stritch on this great offering. Ms. Ebersole has a true gift of song. She is a great interpreter, singing each of the songs here with equal verve. One stand-out is her version of a song from 42ND STREET that she did not sing on the stage, Lullaby of Broadway. When Ms. Ebersole and Mr. Stritch duet, the result is fantastic. Their voices soar together. Ms. Ebersole has a wicked wit and it is evident in some of her song selections and in her delivery. If you cannot catch Ms. Ebersole in her frequent NY engagements and her upcoming turn in Steel Magnolias, this CD is a great substitute. The only reason I dont give the CD 5 stars is beacuse I wish there were a few less obvious choices and i would love to have a version of her My Funny Valentine on disc. BRAVO Ms Ebersole, PLEASE KEEP RECORDING!!!

Saw Billy and Christine at Birdland a few years ago (Sondheim was there too!) and recently in SF . They were great both times
The person who gave the one star is totally off the mark
