3.0 out of 5 stars Passionate and committed author deserves praise., September 11, 1997

This review is from: In Your Face: From Actor to Animal Activist (Hardcover)
When he talks about the subject at hand, author Chris DeRose shows there is no one who is more passionate and committed to the plight of animal abuse and the crime of pet theft. However, Mr. DeRose often can't focus his thoughts, and leads the reader down roads which distract from the true problem he so passionately supports. For example, Mr. DeRose sees himself as quite a ladies man, and several times speaks about how so and so was a "real pretty girl" or how he and his friends were just out "looking to get laid". Frankly, I don't know how that helps his quest to free animals from the tortures of vivasection.

Still, Mr. DeRose's text is necessarily harsh, brutal, and realistic, which makes his book one of the most compelling books on this subject in print today. His insight and first-hand accounts of being inside labs command attention and response, but are not for the faint of heart.

Thank you, Mr. DeRose, for offering all you have to the oppressed animal population. You are a true friend to the helpless. You've written a story which needed desparately to be told. And you've written it without pulling your punches and without sentimentalizing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Important facts for animal lovers, March 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: In Your Face: From Actor to Animal Activist (Hardcover)
Mr. DeRose tells the story of the animals like it should be told--straight to the point, no holds barred. Most importantly, he makes you think and decide for yourself if vivisection is a justifiable action. The stories of his personal life show how one man can devote himself to a cause and bring about positive changes. A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Torture, by any name..., September 24, 2000

I'm not a fan of cliches. But since I read this book in a day, how can I avoid saying "I couldn't put it down"! I'm an armchair activist - letters, letters, letters. I don't know where Chris DeRose finds the strength to put himself in situations where hideous cruelty is right there "in his face." Thank heavens he does, and that he chose to share his Direct Action experiences with us. His tale is gripping. And it is a punchy statement on a society which condones, even encourages, torture.
