Book Description

February 23, 2011
The most complete book on urban farming, covering everything from growing organic produce and raising chickens, to running a small farm on a city lot or in a suburban backyard.

Eating locally and growing one's own food is a rapidly evolving movement in urban settings - Hantz Farms in Detroit has transformed 70 acres of abandoned properties into energy-efficient gardens, and Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, a 6,000-foot vegetable farm in Brooklyn, New York, yields 30 different kinds of produce, while private square-foot farms are cropping up in cities all over the country.

Created by Lisa Taylor and the gardeners of Seattle Tilth, Your Farm in the City covers all of the essential information specific to gardening and farming in a city or town.  Clear, easy-to-follow instructions guide and inspire even the most inexperienced urbanite in how to grow and harvest all types of produce, flowers, herbs, and trees, as well as how to raise livestock like chickens, ducks, rabbits, goats, and honeybees.  Important information particular to gardening in a city or town is included, such as planning and maximizing limited space, building healthy soil, managing irrigation, understanding zoning laws, outwitting urban pests, and being a considerate farming neighbor.

With 100 two-color instructional illustrations throughout and dozens of vital resources, Your Farm in the City is the most practical, comprehensive, and easy-to-follow guide to the burgeoning trend of urban farming.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This upbeat manual for aspiring urban gardeners features a gritty but whimsical, graphic-heavy, reader-friendly layout and a 21st-century attitude that will appeal to a younger generation of gardeners intrigued by the idea of growing their own food while living in the city. Chapters on planning a city "farm" (which Taylor likens to the more modestly titled kitchen and victory gardens), intensive growing with vertical plantings, and seed starting lay out the basics in a welcoming, unintimidating manner. Discussions of preserving food and urban farm husbandry, from chickens to bees, as well as detailed information on growing a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, edible flowers, and herbs, are thorough enough to be useful and realistic. Numerous sidebars and boxes feature supplementary information as diverse as designing with children's propensity for jumping over plant beds in mind (make them narrow so the kids won't land in the middle of the bed) and recipes for exotic treats like green tomato muffins and calendula salve. Abundant, clear drawings, from oversized illustrations of insects to plans for hoop houses and beehives, make up for the lack of photographs. (Mar.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I need! March 5, 2011
Format:Paperback
This is an amazing book those of us starting out!
Finally someone has taken the time to address the, "How do I even start?" perspective!

It's great to be a garden enthusiast, but, how wonderful that THIS book will help those of us who AREN'T!

I want to grow my own food- but, to start, I don't need to know every single thing that there is to know about the world of growing food.
Perhaps I will become more interested along the way, but, right now I just want to get some food from my backyard without having to read a GIANT book or take some time consuming class.

Thank you to the author for her effort to create a book that helps me figure out:
What to plant- where to plant- what to buy (and not buy) and what kinds of critters I may want to (eventually) invite to live amongst my azaleas and Rhoddies!

I also appreciate that I can read this book in small doses in- between the zillion other things I need to do in my life!

When reading this book, I feel as though the author is talking RIGHT TO ME!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Farm in Your Backyard March 14, 2011
Format:Paperback
Author Lisa Taylor wants as many people as possible to become farming magicians, transforming even a few feet of urban soil and sun into a backyard, porch or patio farm.

From raising worms and strawberries to cultivating all the ingredients for a gourmet salad, this nifty guidebook has easy to understand instructions as well as answers to the most common challenges urban farmers face.

Why drive to your local Farmer's Market when you can just walk a few feet and pick your own fresh produce. Your Farm in the City shows you how.

5.0 out of 5 stars Artistic, fact-filled, exactly what I needed! January 3, 2012
Format:Paperback
I live in the northwest. I actually live in the country, but I know little about agriculture. This book makes growing things so simple and FUN! I started my first garden last year and harvested the best tasting tomatoes I've ever had! I'm lucky to have a lot of space for a garden, but this book has so many alternatives for every lifestyle! This book teaches you how to keep your soil healthy, and if you don't have space for a garden, no sweat! It has lots of tips for growing plants in raised beds and pots, even window gardens! If you are going to read any gardening book, read this.
