4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Course Warm Up
Farsi is a tough language to learn and 100 Words provides a good start for those who have no exposure to the language. I think there could have been more common words chosen for the first 100 words a person learns in the language, but the book is good at teaching your brain how to commit these words to memory with flashcards and exercises where you match the phonetic,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.
As a beginner in learning Persian, this book has been a lot of help. I like the simplified approach, the flash cards, the repetetive exercises and the activities that emphasize the 100 words. This book also helped me learn the complex Persian alphabet which is so different from the English alphabet. Granted 100 words is a small vocabulary in any language - but it is 100...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Course Warm Up, June 21, 2004

This review is from: Your First 100 Words in Persian (Paperback)
Farsi is a tough language to learn and 100 Words provides a good start for those who have no exposure to the language. I think there could have been more common words chosen for the first 100 words a person learns in the language, but the book is good at teaching your brain how to commit these words to memory with flashcards and exercises where you match the phonetic, English, and Farsi form of the word. For anyone who is going to take a course in Farsi, I would definitely recommend this book as a pre-course, get your feet wet, kind of study aid. It takes a fun approach to learning the language and you'll feel a lot better starting a course with some words and the alphabet already under your belt. For those of you doing self-study or looking to travel, you will not find use for this book. This book has you learn words, not phrases and you'll likely be disappointed. But if you are looking to get a headstart on a course or just deciding whether you want to learn Farsi, this is a good place to start.

This book is absolutely perfect for beginners such as myself. You immediately learn practical everyday vocabulary that you can really use. The exercises are actually fun! You'll feel like a kid again doing the exercises. It's repetitive enough to allow you to retain the learned vocabulary and the exercises are diverse enough so it's not boring.

An easy to understand book that let you learn Farsi from the beginning. The system of the cards at the end of the book is very good and you can make a play of it.

1.0 out of 5 stars for learning script, not for speaking, no pronunciation help!, January 3, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Your First 100 Words in Persian (Paperback)
This book focuses on teaching the script, and gives absolutely no help with pronunciation, which is the hardest thing about learning farsi for "total beginners." There are no dictionary pronunciation symbols or similar sounding words as examples -- I mean, really, NO PRONUNCIATION HELP AT ALL. You need to have a persian friend sitting with you, teaching you pronunciation as you go through this book, otherwise you will be laughed at when you try to speak. the book says it has "pronunciation tips," but they don't exist. the authors should look at a dictionary to see how pronunciation is conveyed in text.

An excellent starter book if used in conjunction with other tools such as Conversational Farsi CD's by Pimsleur and Lonely Planet Farsi (Persian) Phrasebook. Not an end in itself, but a very good workbook for using in those spare moments we all try to capture.

4.0 out of 5 stars From someone who has recently started to learn farsi, February 24, 2008

This review is from: Your First 100 Words in Persian (Paperback)
I have recently started to learn Farsi - including reading and writing.
I find this book useful in helping build my vocabulary, particularly the flash cards at the end of the book. However, the other activities that include the knowledge of reading and writing will sure be more useful once I learn the Farsi alphabet which does take time.

This book helps a person learn Farsi and, besides, it's fun. The flashcards are a very good idea. Use it as part of your library for learning Farsi.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Way To Start!, July 9, 2011

I loved working with this book. I am a language teacher and I thought this book took an intelligent approach. It starts at the beginning...with the alphabet! No one source is perfect in isolation, so I used this book in conjunction with easypersian.com. I could listen to how the letters in the alphabet are said and the sounds that go along with them. I was reading Persian words in no time and the included flashcards were a great tool for memorizing vocabulary. It's definitely a beginner book, but one has to start somewhere! I highly recommend it.
