Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Truly one of the most charming and beautiful films to come out of Spanish cinema in the past year, YOUR LIFE IN 65 is a bittersweet story of love, friendship and death. Twenty-something mates Francisco, Ignacio, and Dani meet for their Sunday rituals: a paella, a dip in the sea. After spotting an obituary for a schoolmate, they decide to attend the funeral. They realize it wasn't him. Confusion turns to coincidence as they meet a couple of young women who will disrupt their perfect summer`s day. With an attractive cast, a witty script, playful pop soundtrack featuring music by THE OBLIGATIONS, SNOWGLOBE, JAVIER ALVAREZ, and beautiful Barcelona as backdrop, YOUR LIFE IN 65 treats its subjects with the lightest touch.

"Your Life in 65"

Love, Friendship, Death

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Director Maria Ripoll transforms a Spanish play into a beautiful movie with "Your Life in 65". Here is a story that is bittersweet as it brings to the fore the issues of love and friendship. Three young twenty-something friends--Francisco, Ignacio and Dani are our main characters. Every Sunday they would meet for their regular outings to the sea and to eat paella. On one of those Sundays, they spot an obituary of one of their schoolmates and decide to attend the funeral. While there they realized that the dead person was not who they thought it was and their confusion turns into coincidence when they meet two young women who disrupt their summer idyll.
Because they attended the wrong funeral, life itself became more apparent to them. Dani realizes that he has no idea of what falling in love really means. The unknown dead guy and he had shared the same girlfriend helped him to understand the death of his own father as well as past relationships.
This beautiful movie contains moments of sadness and this could be the reason for its beauty. Love and life are themes but it seems to me that the overall theme of the film is death. The characters evolve throughout the film and as they evolve they mature. What ultimately happens at the end of the film may not be to everyone's liking but that was the way it seemed to have to end.
Somewhat transcendental, the movie still manages to convey humor and in many cases it seems to have another worldly quality to it. The movie is a comedy in which the closeness of death is never far enough away. In the last three minutes of the film there is a surprise which was a dramatic gamble that we are not quite aware tat has been foreshadowed all along.
The problem I had with the film was that many of the coincidences were, in reality, not coincidences at all and the dialog at times seems to be a bit over the top--too long and not deep.
All in all, I liked the way the issue of death is handled in the movie. So often we forget that death is a fact of life and something that we must face. We tend not to do so until we absolutely are required to and this movie uses death as a starting point for the formation of new relationships.

4.0 out of 5 stars 65 - no more, no less, March 12, 2008
For a movie with a comic premise not to make light of a serious subject matter such as death, the director must negotiate a delicate balance. To this end, the movie turns out be very refreshing. The two main characters are very affecting and the script is well written with some very witty lines. If I were to wish for something more from this movie, I'd like to see a slightly beefed up plot and character development. But these deficiencies are nicely compensated by the accompanying sound tracks and the Barcelaona backdrop. Overall, a very enjoyable and somewhat thought provoking movie. A small warning - the subtitles go really fast at the beginning, but you should be able to catch up after a while.
