Review

“Compelling . . . . Pauley's book is chockablock with keen insights for career transitions.” (USA Today)

“Readers seeking new directions will find a wealth of inspiration.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Jane Pauley is America’s baby boomer—taking us through those formative years to what next? Here she tells us in instructive, humorous, and utterly useful ways. I learned a lot—and so will you.” (Tom Brokaw)

“Jane Pauley is a wonderful guide to all the different ways you can open new doors in life, many of which lead to unexpected places. She shows with humor and a great generosity of spirit why the journey to reinvention can come from all kinds of places and produce all kinds of joys.” (Michael J. Fox)

“Jane Pauley speaks for boomers—the regeneration generation—who are exploring new lives in their bonus decades of vitality before traditional old age. Her moving personal journey, woven into the inspiring stories of men and women across the country, gives hope to all of us who ask: what next?” (Abigail Trafford, author of My Time and As Time Goes By)

“Beautifully written, filled with rich and compelling stories, and immensely practical, this book is destined to become a classic—the indispensable companion for all of us navigating the great gift of longer lives.” (Marc Freedman, founder/CEO of Encore.org and author of The Big Shift)

“Well, here it is—finally. The guide for baby boomers on getting from here to there—from a state of panic over how to live the rest of their lives to a state of passion and performance as they do so with grace and pleasure. Read it and then go!” (Jim Lehrer)

“In her early career, Jane Pauley was a role model for generations of women forging their paths in the workplace. Now, in her encore career, she’s a role model again, guiding millions of boomers as they reimagine their lives.” (Marci Alboher, VP, Encore.org and author of The Encore Career Handbook)

"Sadly, we're too old now to believe we're going to live forever. But we ARE going to live longer than any generation in history. So what shall we do with that information? Jane sees opportunities I'd missed until I read her book. Not only did she cheer me up about aging; she inspired me. But Jane has always done that." (Linda Ellerbee, journalist and author)

This is a book for people who are approaching or presently experiencing their “senior” (sorry for the dirty word) years. As you will learn from this book there is a whole world out there waiting to be explored for those who can get their imagination together. Jane Pauley has done a nice job of describing many of these possibilities. She has done it with wit, humor and candor. Is your age and lifestyle making you depressed? Attitude is everything. Reading this book could be a game changer for almost everyone.

Just three weeks ago I left my job due to health reasons. Stress and anxiety were overwhelming me. Not knowing what to do now that I was unemployed and wondering how at 58 I was going to find a job this book made me see that there is hope to make a change. Something better is possible

The best parts of the book are where Jane Pauley writes about herself. I did not know she was bipolar. She also talks about herself and some of her insecurities.

The book is highly anecdotal. I felt the book should have been divided into two sections with one section about people pursuing new interests and another about people pursuing new careers.

Many of the people in this book I would say are in retirement-they don't have to worry about money. I think that is a common form of reinvention-people in retirement who no longer have to worry about money so they can pursue what they are interested in rather than make money. Benjamin Franklin and Bill Gates might be examples of this type of reinvention.

However, I think this book will be a disappointment to many people who are fifty plus (like myself) who are looking for a change but still need to work. Many of the women in this book did not need to work for money. This is in a contrast to me and many end of the baby boom women who now have major breadwinning responsibilities which their mothers did not have.

Many people both men and women are expecting to need to work until their seventies for money. Most people I know if their fifties if they are lucky enough to be working are feeling the golden handcuff. Their jobs have grown old but they still have major responsibilities and need to work. Many are starting the major expense of sending their kids to college. They have reached a stage in their careers where it is hard to make a change without getting a cut in income and they need the money. In addition, the recession is making it hard for people to change jobs.

Most people I know over 50 want to reinvent themselves. However, many of them lack the means to make this transformation.

Although this is billed as a book for Boomers, as someone in my mid30s, I found the stories Jane tells to be inspirational and I hope that it leads to finding my Life's Calling a bit sooner! As a journalism major who has followed Pauley's career, I also enjoyed the way she incorporated her life's story into the book. Her openness with mental illness is particularly impactful. My mom is schizophrenic and, sadly, my family does not talk about it. This book was a quick, enjoyable read that leaves you feeling eager to make your next move.

I grew up watching Jane Pauley on TV. She is an excellent role model for working mothers. She is also someone I admire as a human being, for her honesty and curiosity. Myself, my siblings and good friends are boomers, and are all within reach of answering, "what's next" for our lives. I've read many books on this topic, looking for the magic path to understanding. Jane's book has helped and it will help shape how I think about reinventing myself in the near future. I have purchased copies for both my sister-in-laws that will retire this year. I am going to purchase another copy for my friends at work who, like me, are with in reach of retirement. We are the luckiest generation ever, and the theme I hear over and over is that we want to give back as thanks for our good fortune. This book will give us the spark to make it happen. Thank you Jane!

Jane Pauley is no stranger to many of us. She is a television journalist, and has been involved in news reporting since 1975. In her book Your Life Calling: Reimagining the Rest of Your Life, she shares her own stories and introduces readers to the fascinating people she has featured on her award-winning Today show segment, Life Reimagined Today. The stories are delightful, compelling, and inspiring for anyone looking for a change.

The book is designed to help people who are in the middle of their lives to successfully navigate a“reinvention” phase and build a positive, powerful future. It is an instructive and inspiring book that will help and motivate you to live your best life now, and in the future.

She writes, “Sometimes it takes the better part of a lifetime to find out what your passion is, but in my observation, if you do, it might be the best part of your life.” If you are stuck somewhere in life, this book will inspire you to get out of the rut and tranform your life for good.

It is a book not to be missed!
