5.0 out of 5 stars Give yourself a new lease on life and read this book! January 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Readers of Joy DeKok's book, Your Life, a Legacy: Explore and Record the Times of Your Life will be taken on a legacy- as well as a soul-quest. Like the title implies, DeKok asks us to take time to write about our histories, not only for what they might reveal to us as we think about them now, but also as a way to leave a lesson or perhaps a memory of time gone by to future generations.

She asks us to look for "satchel" and "steamer trunk" stories, those memories of ours that, if we only had one or two stories to write down, that we would share.

I tried writing a "steamer trunk" story using the question prompts DeKok gives. I was amazed at their depths and how quickly I was able to delve into my memories and write the story.

DeKok not only asks us to write fun and our most vivid stories, but she also asks us to reveal the stories that might not be easy to write or reveal. I did write up one legacy story that was a hard story to tell. But after I had done so, I felt like I had freed myself of a big pile of rocks I'd been carrying around on my back. Writing the story also gave me a fresh perspective on the event, one that I hadn't seen when I had experienced it.

This book is a great springboard to launch yourself into being a renewed you. Perspective offers a new slant on life. Turn off the reality TV and make your life become real to another person. Take the time to read and do the prompts in this book. You really will be given a new lease on life and when you are finished, you'll have this wonderful legacy to hand down to future generations who will enjoy reading about your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Gold Mine! January 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Joy DeKok has written such a treasure between the covers of this little book. Her insightful suggestions for creating a written legacy have sparked a genuine desire in me to start working on my own Legacy - I love when that kind of thing happens! With each topic she asks penetrating questions that can't help but ignite long-forgotten stories and memories within you. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. Turn off the TV and read YOUR LIFE, A LEGACY. Your kids and grandkids and their kids and their kids . . . will all love you for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I had found this earlier... January 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book encourages people to write their life stories by guiding them through the process. It tells people that their life story is important to tell for others to read, but it encourages using these stories as a tool to teach others from the person's life experiences. It points out that there are lessons and stories that can help the future generations understand their history, where they came from, why some things are the way they are in their families and it's a way to keep alive those stories. The author shares some of her own life stories to illustrate the method but also to let you know that it's OK to share less than positive things and how we learn and others can learn from them.

I like how it explains that this is more than storytelling, but sharing the feelings and sensations of the moment in which they were experienced which makes the stories come to life for those who will be reading the later. It gives you the tools to trigger the memories and select your stories.

I recommend this book to everybody; to start writing their Legacy and keep it alive for years to come. Personally reading this book has touched my heart because my mother had me at an older age, my older siblings had the opportunity of seeing more of her life than I have. Some years ago I bought her a notebook to write her life stories, family recipes and remedies. To this day she doesn't seem to be able to organize her thoughts. I'm going to share this book with her and hope that this step by step manual encourages her to do so. I see the importance of these Life Legacy stories. Because of my parent's age when I was born, I didn't get to enjoy grandparents and I have missed a lot of information and my own legacy, so I encourage anyone to do this, your future generations will so appreciate it.

More About the Author

I love words, and enjoy reading them as much as I do writing. My journey into both began when I was four and taught myself how to read. Somehow, I'd noticed the white space between the words she read and realized that's how to know where one word ended and another started. I listened to her say the words as I looked at each one. One day, I just "got" it. When she found me reading to my dolls and stuffed animals, she thought I'd memorized the stories, but handed me a new book and I could read most of it on my own.

That's when I started dreaming about putting my own words on the pages.

Later, I fell in love with libraries, paper, pencils, and pens. With my small weekly allowance (for cleaning my room or helping dust) I'd visit Ben Franklin or Woolworths, and buy a new tablet, notebook, or pencil. I remember the day when I was allowed to buy a set of Bic ball point pens - oh my goodness! I had blue, black, red, and green to choose from and contained ink - a really big deal to me. It was like graduation day.

Over time, the dream to write because I loved the words meshed with an equally important component: writing FOR others - to entertain and encourage; to touch and maybe even teach.

It's the writing FOR that gets me past all the excuses, fears, and distractions. The love of words is my life dance - they lead, and I follow.
