1.0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment
I just don't understand the positive reviews this book has received. I own many books on beauty and fashion, and this one is a real disappointment. I learned nothing I don't already know and if I had the energy, I'd return it. It's sophomoric in style and seems outdated as well.

This review is from: Your Makeover: Simple Ways for Any Woman to Look Her Best (Spiral-bound)
As a makeup novice, I found this book helpful and certainly have gotten lots of compliments when I apply the rules I learned here. Her makeup tips are easy to follow and her emphasis on a fundamentally natural look and largely simple applications makes this easy for almost anybody to pick up at least a few tips. I gave the book high marks because I personally got at least ten new pieces of information that I've been able to use, and that's not too bad!

That being said, as another pale, freckled, German/Irish-extraction woman in her thirties, I think I got more out of this book than many users. Morgan is really talking about her own makeup regimen, and doesn't have much to offer women of color, or darker-skinned white women either.

Also, gratuitous sections written by some doctor she works with, are a complete re-tread of advice you'll get in any women's magazine at least three times a year (stay out of the sun, drink lots of water, exercise, you are what you eat -- there, now you can skip all the parts he wrote).

Finally, I would have appreciated some more specific advice on purchasing makeup -- or, at least, more relevant to the labelling at the makeup counter. She makes much hay about noncomedogenic and other such designations, but having gone to the department store AND the health-food-store with a shopping list generated from the book's guidelines, I had no luck finding products with the kinds of chemical-mix attributes she recommends. The cosmetic companies don't market using her terminology. It would have been a better book with more of this kind of specific guidance. I do, however, applaud her for not selling out to a particular brand and recommending all their products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent info from an insider, August 1, 2000

This review is from: Your Makeover: Simple Ways for Any Woman to Look Her Best (Spiral-bound)
YOUR MAKEOVER is an attractive book bound in a useable three-ring like binding. The photos are good, and like the author says, not retouched, which is encouraging. Before and after pictures are shown, and the models are not all of the Cosmo-cover variety (but they do all look beautiful in the "after" stage).

DeMann's style is very engaging, and her prose is levelheaded as well as observant. Her tips are factual and helpful, and this book is clearly not designed to give anyone an inferiority complex but instead, to help build self-esteem while teaching to enhance your natural assets.

The information in this book could not possibly be outdated because DeMann's core philosophy is that the person and not the makeup should be the focus. Therefore, most of the tips in the book are aimed at the natural look, which can never be outdated.

Bottom line: useful book written in an engaging style with many attractive photos. Definitely user-friendly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written for the makeup novice....., May 17, 2000

What a great book for those of us who aren't blessed with perfect anything! I found this book to have simple and helpful tips that are written for my level of experience. The photos help me learn how to apply makeup, since I don't normally take the time to do it. I've learned how to make simple changes in my hair and face that totally change the way I look, with minimal effort. People may confuse the clearly written advice as being oversimplified, but for the make-up un-sophisticated woman like me, you'll find them refreshingly easy to follow! Thanks Ms. DeMann!

A breath of fresh air for the makeup-challenged! This book sets out simple ways for any woman to look her best, with a minimum of effort! Morgen guides us expertly, helping us to touch all aspects of our beauty, both inside and out. The photography is spectacular and unique for this type of work, her models and examples are as true as can be, and she clearly imparts her tremendous talent and flair for the art of looking your best! The pages are "plasticized" and the binding spiraled so that this book can be USED, everyday, and for any event. She is truly an artist! This book is a MUST HAVE for every woman, and an awesome gift!

As someone who works and really only has 10 minutes in the morning, this was a huge help! If I buy make-up once a year, it is a feat, and this book has made it much easier. It might be overly simplified for true beauty junkies, but if you want people to notice you and not your makeup, this is it! Also helpful was the fact that the phots are not re-touched, so you really can duplicate the results! I thank you and my husband thanks you :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificant Makeover, May 5, 2000

This review is from: Your Makeover: Simple Ways for Any Woman to Look Her Best (Spiral-bound)
I have read many books and magazine articles about makeovers, and I have never been able to follow through with many of them because they usually require me to go out and get hard to find or expensive items. I truly love this book and I have two teenage daughters that love it also. One found a hairstyle she wanted to have and got and used the book tips for maintaining a beautiful hairstyle. And my other daughter used the tips on nail care and she is having a blast and actually following through with the tips and has also let her girlfriends see her book in order to get ideas . I found the tips on hairstyles for rounder faces especially helpful. I have since put my hair up in various styles and my husband has actually commented to me that I look slimmer. I can go on and on but really wanted to tell the author: I really truly am going to enjoy this book and not just for myself but my daughters as well. My husband will love the fact it will cost us very little to maintain our beauty. I will gladly tell my family and friends to purchase your book. And please continue to put your wonderful tips in writing. Thank You

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Makeover Techniques, January 2, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Your Makeover: Simple Ways for Any Woman to Look Her Best (Spiral-bound)
This book offers easy to follow instructions and great photos. The looks are not outlandish - you can wear these looks to work, on the weekend, etc., but the difference between before and after is still quite wonderful. Ms. DeMann's advice for doing "invisible" eyeliner (something I had been unsuccessful at for years until now) was worth the cost of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal, August 2, 2001

This review is from: Your Makeover: Simple Ways for Any Woman to Look Her Best (Spiral-bound)
My mother doesn't wear makeup and I didn't have an older sister to show me how to apply makeup so this book was just what I had been looking for. I have tried makeup tricks from magazines and other beauty books but it never came out the way it looked in the picture. The photos in "Your Makeover" are not touched up/ digitally enhanced... What you see is what you get! If you are beyond the basics and a little more playful with your makeup then perhaps this isn't the book for you but you never know...you may be doing something wrong!

I already own several books on beauty/fashion/makeup but I still learned something new from this book. Ms. DeMann encourages a very natural look for everyday...how can that ever be outdated? She teaches you how to enhance what you already have. She has some great hair tips...for instance, "washing" my hair with conditioner some of the time instead of always using shampoo made a big difference to my fly-away mane. Also, the products she lists in her "favorites" come from a variety of price ranges...some you can get in a drugstore, some are more exclusive. I appreciated that she had the open-mindedness to try a lot of different products. Not every subject is covered in depth, but then if it were, this would be several books, not just one. I definitely think this was worth the money I spent on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Morgen Schick Shares All Her Makeup Secrets, July 14, 2001

This review is from: Your Makeover: Simple Ways for Any Woman to Look Her Best (Spiral-bound)
I have seen Morgen Schick's lovely face in fashion magazines countless times and when I heard that she had written a makeup book and launched a makeup line I thought it was just another industry insider trying to cash in. However, I was soooooo wrong! I bought her book last year and found it to be so informative and easy to follow. I thought I knew everything about makeup application, but this book taught me a few things. Morgen shows us how to look natural and glowing without looking madeup. With this book you can look great for every occasion without people noticing all your makeup. I've also tried Morgen's makeup and skin care line that she sells on TV and the products are user friendly just like the book. Buy this book, even if you've been applying your own makeup for decades. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the simple advice that can make you look brand new. I'll be buying several more copies this year for gift giving.

PS: The spiral design is great and convenient to use.
