Book Description

September 2001
This is the first and only Southern cookbook to provide a complete range of low carbohydrate recipes. It offers traditional favorites like fried green tomatoes and cornbread recipes. All recipes contain a carbohydrate per serving analysis and 83% of the recipes contain only 5 grams or less of carbohydrates. The recipe directions are written in an easy to follow format.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Whether for weight loss or for counteracting diabetes, many have found a happy solution to health issues by following a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. But temptations to break that regimen abound, and people hunger after starchy, sugary comfort foods. Jackie Hanna comes to the rescue with Not Your Momma's Cookbook. Hanna creates low-carbohydrate versions of southern-style home cooking. Some of Hanna's solutions are simple: eliminate carbohydrates from Eggs Benedict by removing the English muffin. Others are less obvious: substitute turnips for potatoes in potato salad and in potato soup. Soy flour replaces wheat flour as thickener, and sugar alternatives abound. Recipes are generally simple and homey, but some require hard-to-find prepackaged flour substitutes. Nutritional analyses in the recipes limit themselves only to carbohydrate grams. Mark Knoblauch

I'm only rating this a one star because there are way too many recipes in this book that resemble this: Barbequed Steak: salt and pepper the meat, and cook it on the barbeque til done. I needed to spend $16.95 to learn that? I was looking for more comprehensive Southern recipes. This isn't the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goodbye Carbs!!!, November 9, 2001
This review is from: Not Your Momma's Cookbook (Plastic Comb)
I'm a chef, I'm Italian, and I like to eat. It's no big surprise that Italians like to eat, and we're known for HIGH carb meals.
Pasta, pizza, garlic bread, tomato sauce!!!! I love it but I'd like to stay below 200 pounds.
This book gives a fine alternative and tasty recipes. I highly suggest you buy this book. Hey, I'm Italian, I would'nt lie.
