What you should know,
This review is from: Your Mother Has Suffered a Slight Stroke (Paperback)
A friend gave me this book when my mother suffered a stroke. This book helped me understand and know what to ask, when to ask and how to ask questions. I have read several books recently and this one outlined more about what I needed to know. I would recommend it highly. It certainly helped me.

I'm a bereavement counselor and I coucil with people who are experiencing many different types of losses. A mentor of mine told me about this book months ago. She called me the other day to ask if I had put this book to work by using the information in it to help others. It reminded me of all the great information and love in this well written book about getting a family through medical trauma. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with any kind of a disease. A stroke can come into any of our lives any minute on any given day. This book is about so much more than strokes.

A Necessary Handbook for Every Home Library!,
By
This review is from: Your Mother Has Suffered a Slight Stroke (Paperback)
Talented author, Kathy Bosworth, has written a timely and informative book for all who have aging parents or know of other with aging family members or friends. In a step by step discussion of the effects of a stroke on the loved one and on others who are "standing by," we are taken along on a daily, weekly, and monthly review of a family's coping and a "first-hand" account as understanding and adjustment becomes a primary focus in caring for the individual, in this case, Kathy's mother. It is a sensitive, touching, and informative account that can serve as a guide-book for many of us who do not understand the full impact of a stroke and its implications. It is written in a language we can all understand and the reader is drawn into the daily experiences until the conclusion of the book. I recommend this book for every home library as a source of referral and information. Your Mother has Suffered a Slight Stroke is a necessary and helpful read for everyone and the reader is sure to relate to Kathy and her family and their touching and poignant, true-life experiences. So much help in a small easy to read book.,

This review is from: Your Mother Has Suffered a Slight Stroke (Paperback)
A friend of mine insisted I read this book. My family has been dealing with strokes for a long time. Our family has been through so much of what Kathy Bosworth wrote in her book. I couldn't believe when I read that her mother's original diagnosis had been wrong. The very same thing happened to us. We had so much to learn about nursing homes, wills, living wills, doctors, and of course the different types of strokes. Kathy covers all this in her book. This is a book everyone needs to read before it happens in your family. Strokes can happen to anyone at anytime. If you are dealing with any type of serious medical problem I think this book would also be of benefit. Kathy is a gracious writer and I thank you for writing it and I am grateful to my friend for recommending it to me. It really did help me and I will recommend it every chance I get.

This review is from: Your Mother Has Suffered a Slight Stroke (Paperback)
Kathy Bosworth has written a fluent book that is surely a gift of wisdom for all of us readers. She relays her mother's story commencing with a routine test not requiring a ride to or from the hospital. During the test, her mother has a stroke. The hospital makes a call to the family, which ignites an emotional bungie jumping between confusion and fearful concern. In this incredible book, Kathy brings you full circle starting with the onset of the first stroke to life ending and new life beginning.Kathy describes with courageous honesty the basic and the complex of the "unknowns" that plague her and her brother. She gracefully paints a portrait of a family holding together, learning together, and confronting life changes together. This book is testament that one moment in time changes our lives forever. One of my especially liked sentences in this book is when Kathy's brother Ed says to her, "Kathy, you're not looking for more information on stokes, what you are looking for is someone with a crystal ball that will tell you what is going to happen". Kathy can't help but still search for someone - anyone that will tell her the hard sterile truth. Kathy braves observing her sweet mother become a person she didn't know and one who in return didn't know her. Every visit Kathy is not sure what she will see or hear. Will her mother be herself today or will she be a stranger? There are high points and very low points yet Kathy retains her sense of humor, her love, and her hunger for knowledge about this situation alive and kicking at all times. This is why this book is so indispensable. You learn with her and from her. Not only about the different types of strokes but also the following consequences such as physical therapy, no resuscitation bracelets, nursing homes, dealing with assets, the government, and of course all of the physical and mental changes. This information is absolutely a must for every professional dealing with strokes. I certainly hope people will be able to find this book in every library in every city. Kathy approaches her book with courageous honesty. I found "Your Mother has Suffered a Slight Stroke" a loving jewel of clarity into the living with and caring for a loved one who has had a stroke. Thank you, Kathy, for taking on such a difficult subject with such bravery and candor. Reviewed by Sherry Russell GMS

Daughter's love story,
By Lynn Barry (Lynn Barry, author of "Puddles" and "Bjoyfl") - See all my reviews
This review is from: Your Mother Has Suffered a Slight Stroke (Paperback)
Kathy Bosworth has authored a daughter's love story in her book Your Mother Has Suffered a Slight Stroke. Bosworth's mother had a stroke and her physical as well as mental conditions worsened dramatically. Bosworth shares her personal story of how she stayed by her mother's side even though her mother became verbally abusive at times due to the stroke. Many 40 something folks opt not to hang around, but Bosworth saw her mother through the pain and suffering and endured whatever her mother dished out under the effects of her condition. Bosworth tells a tale of how she got through a very difficult period in her life with courage, dignity and love. Her example, beautiful portrayed in this accounting will cause the reader to laugh out loud as well as tear up at times. Bosworth has crafted a beautiful story. I recommend it.

I was captivated by this book. Some parts made me laugh and some made me cry. I felt that the author shared some very important information that many people need to know. Dealing with nursing homes, financial matters, and doctors can be very frustrating and confusing. Putting your affairs in order before an illness strikes is essential. L.A. Johnson for Midwest Book Review - stunning book,
By
This review is from: Your Mother Has Suffered a Slight Stroke (Paperback)
This is a stunning book. It should be required reading for every medical professional. Doctors, nurses, and therapists, should have to read it twice, once in their first year of study and again before they graduate. I'm serious. And that is not to say that only medical professionals will benefit from reading this well-written book. Kathleen Bosworth tells her touching story from the lay person's point of view. From that first heart gripping moment when she gets the bad news about her mother's stroke by phone, to the last page, the author's personality shines through. Her outrage, quiet humor, and sense of decency make this book stand out in ways it never might have if a lesser writer had created it. Ms. Bosworth's mother had a stroke. That much can be gleaned from the title. From there the author takes each reader through a maze of doctors, nurses, and therapists who are less than helpful. Some are downright rude, or maybe ignorant. Her search for answers, and for professionals who have hearts as well as brains is detailed honestly. With the support of a loving, close-knit family, she struggles to find a constructive way of managing her mother's care. Kathleen Bosworth educates herself about treatment plans, possible outcomes, patients rights, living wills, and insurance coverage. With courage and determination, she and her brother fight the system to get their mother the loving care she needs and deserves. I recommend this book to everyone and repeat again: This is a stunning story. |
