Too much Ballard, not enough America,
By A Fan (VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Your Move (Audio CD)
Too much Ballard and not enough America. I guess after the success of the Russ Ballard written "You Can Do Magic" the previous year, they figured if a little Ballard is a good thing, more Ballard would be even better! They were wrong. This is one of their weaker albums. America (Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell) only wrote or co-wrote 4 of the songs while the bulk are Ballard songs. It does contain some good songs including their last top 40 hit, "The Border" from 1983, and I also like "Tonight is for Dreamers" and "She's a Runaway." But as a whole, this was a letdown after their excellent "View from the Ground" album.

Not Bad,
By A Customer
This review is from: Your Move (Audio CD)
Not bad, but not one of their better efforts. This album is more a Russ Ballard work than America. He produced it and was involved in writing 7 of the songs, while America was only involved in writing 4 songs. Contains their last top 40 hit to date, The Border. Best album cuts: Tonight Is For Dreamers, She's A Runaway, and Love's Worn Out Again. Could have used more Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley, and less Ballard.

Still Very Nice,

Even though, as other reviewers have already pointed out, this 1983 release includes a lot of input from British producer/arranger/performer and co-writer Russ Ballard, he did a good job of bringing out the best of AMERICA on "Your Move". Who can really blame Gerry Beckley & Dewey Bunnell for giving Russ Ballard another try, after his production "You Can Do Magic" provided them with a huge hit a year before?Overall, "Your Move" is one of the better AMERICA albums - way better than the uneven 1984 release "Perpective". The standout track "The Border" has all the classic AMERICA elements, as have a handful of other good selections like "Cast the Spirit" or "My Kinda Girl", while two or three weaker tracks clearly show that Gerry B. & Dewey B. were not overly involved in the production. Singer Stephen Bishop adds some nice harmony vocals, by the way.

IT'S ABOUT TIME THEY RELEASED THIS ONE,
By A Customer
This review is from: Your Move (Audio CD)
I've been hoping that someone would eventually release this one. I loved the album when it was released in 1983 and still feel the same. Almost every selection is good. This has to be their best effort of the period. If you like America, you'll love this disc.

GET THIS MUSIC CD, IT'S YOUR MOVE, BY AMERICA. EACH ONE OF THE 11 SONGS ON THIS CD ARE TERRIFIC. THE SONGWRITING IS STRONG, THE VOCALS CRISP, THE MELODIES, RYTHMS, THE SOUNDS, THE BEATS...YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. THE BORDER, SHE'S A RUNAWAY, SOMEDAY WOMAN, YOUR MOVE, DON'T LET ME BE LONEY ARE JUST A FEW OF THE GREAT SONGS HERE. YOU WILL BE PLAYING THIS CD OVER AND OVER AGAIN, SINGING ALONG WITH THIS GREAT BAND. I SAW THEM 3 TIMES IN CONCERT AND WISH I COULD SEE THEM EVERY YEAR. YOU WILL NEVER TIRE OF LISTENING TO THESE GUYS. THIS IS WHAT REALLY GOOD MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT. MY KINDA WOMAN, HONEY.CAST THE SPIRIT AND LOVES WORN OUT AGAIN ARE MORE OF THE GREAT SONGS IN THIS CLASSIC COLLECTION. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

YOUR MOVE ISN'T THAT MOVING,
By Michael Butts (Berkeley Springs, WV USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

I have been a fan of AMERICA throughout their 30+ years of recording, so I was rather disappointed with YOUR MOVE.
America's best albums were those under George Martin's expert production. Russ Ballard's production skills aren't quite as polished. Also, the songs on this collection aren't as well-crafted and aren't as memorable. While the intricate harmonies are evidenced, the arrangements lack imagination and inventiveness. The title track is the best of the lot, harkening back to their earlier material. America has done some very good albums...YOUR MOVE is merely okay.

This album/cd is by far one of the best America has ever done.I have been
a fan since "horse with no name" ages ago and saw them in London in 69 when The Stones played for FREE in Hyde Park among a crowd of half a million or so.Argent has always been a Favorite as well and the addition of Russ Ballard makes this a standout cd.There is not one bad song on the whole thing and I listen to it time and time again.A must buy for America fans and/or Argent fans as well. |
