5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read, March 11, 2003

Without a doubt one of the BEST books I've read on birds! Informative and fun to read. Helps to understand the way birds think. Truly sound advice on how to remedy behavioral problems and/or heading them off before they start. Great for all around advice including dietary needs, cage placement as it relates to behavior, when to consult an avian veterinarian (including how to find an avian veterinarian), flock behavior, etc. A must read for all bird owners~!! A BIG two thumbs up~!!

This books gives you a way of relating to issues with birds... biting, screaming, feather plucking and many more. You'll gain a perspective from a pet birds point of view ... and be able to translate what it cannot say in human words to make it's life (and yours) much happier.

... and Nikki Moustaki can prove it! As I was reading, I kept telling myself "it's like she's been living with my Blue and Gold macaw for the past six months!" I have had my parrot for almost ten years now, and I learned a lot. I am usually not an avid reader, but I must confess I went through this book in just a few hours!! It is obvious that the author knows what she is talking about, yet she avoids that "condescending attitude" that nobody needs when they struggle with a pet bird. Instead, she goes out of her way to explain the bare facts. And she does so in such a practical way that the reader can actually relate to what she is explaining, and put it to work! Grrreat book for anyone faced with an apparently "outta control bird"! An even better book for anybody thinking of buying a parrot. Parrots are long-lived creatures and people should know what they are getting themselves into...! Shame on pet stores who fail to educate their customers!

A friend of mine has a parrot and was having alot of behavorial issues, as biting and loud squaking. I purchased this book for my friend and she applied the suggestions, it offered. Since then she has a much happier, better behaved pet.. I highly recomment this book, it is easy reading, and even I found it quite interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars No more biting & screaming, July 4, 2009

I have read many bird books, and this is the best. My green wing macaw is twenty years old. I wish I had this book many years before. I was giving mixed messages to my bird, and did not have a clue what he wanted, and did not understand hormone change affected behavior. He was receiving too much light and not enough sleep. My vet told me that unusual snow accumulations can cause hormore changes just like the sun and bright daylight. I hope that the author expands information to outside people influences and not just the bird owner; i.e., birds are scared if a person with alcohol on their breath comes near them. At family holidays, I choose one older child to guard the bird from other children teasing the bird and sticking things into his cage. Sometimes behavior problems come from the environment that the owner is not aware of those issues. An example would be one family person went around sharing their fear by saying "don't get close to him, he thinks your finger is a french fry and will bite it off."

Cute book, fun read and informative. Your bird won't be ready to audition for prime time TV, but you will at least understand his behavior better.
