1.0 out of 5 stars A "First Time" Disappointment and Regret
It lacks substantive information; moreover, it suffers as a resource tool for those who are looking for more than the obvious, common sense advice (which, incidentally, this book has miserably failed to provide). My advice: Save your money and don't waste time reading this worthless letdown.

5.0 out of 5 stars good book for divorced woman, January 20, 2005
This review is from: On Your Own For The First Time (Paperback)
After a recent divorce I found myself without the basic skills of understanding; leases, banking, credit cards and insurance. I found this book after visiting a friend and discussing my situation with her, my friend said this book helped her son who was leaving for college. I checked it out and then later bought my own copy. This is really good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I had though of that!, April 9, 2006
This review is from: On Your Own For The First Time (Paperback)
My daughter received this book for a graduation gift. I was so impressed with it that I'm ordering more to give as gifts to her graduating friends. I wish I had owned such a practical book when I graduated and/or moved out of my parents' house. I still may have to borrow it, if "IT" ever happens to me. Thanks Mr. Bowers for such a valuable book (I sincerely mean that). I just wish I had thought to write something like this!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gift and resourceful guide!, January 25, 2002

This review is from: On Your Own For The First Time (Paperback)
This book is a wonderful guide, not only for those "on their own for the first time", but also as a resourse for any adult with responsibilities for their own being. It addresses cars, homes, insurance, and other less frequent items, like preparing a tax return, fixing flat tires, applying for a job, drugs, alcohol and depression. It is a great gift for high school and college grads, as it will help them prepare for the transition from a sheltered life into the real world and aide them in dealing with their responsibilities and life in general.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bottom Line: A great book, but not for kids just starting off in the Real World., May 12, 2008
This review is from: On Your Own For The First Time (Paperback)
This book is a wealth of information, much of it useful at some point, for those leaving their parents' homes. It is thorough and detailed, and therein lies the problem. Kids living on their own for the first time will not be ready for all of this knowledge. They are in for plenty of eye-opening experiences - and surely this book covers a lot of them - but the vast majority of them will NOT take the time to read a comprehensive manual, such as this book, on Day One. Okay, maybe the 1% of kids who do their homework on Friday nights will devour this book at age 18.
High school graduates and kids in college dorms/apartments, and first time communal living dwellers, need the basics, like why it's important to keep an extra stash of tp in your bedroom, not a 13-page litany on car care. (At this stage they are more worried about where they parked their car after last night's party, now that they don't have their parents' garage or driveway in which to park.) And they need these nuggets of knowledge in short spurts of helpful advice, preferrably offered in a style that entices them to continue reading the book. (It doesn't matter how much good info is included in a book if the task of reading it seems daunting.)
So, first buy 50 Ways to Leave Your Mother, and then down the line, once they have thoroughly tested the waters of independent living, buy them On Your Own for the First Time. (It is a good refernce manual.) Eventually there will come a time when they are more receptive to info about stocks, bonds, and mutual funds or personal bankruptcy. 50 Ways to Leave Your Mother

I don't usually take the time to write reviews, but I really liked the book and feel that it is the best gift for ANYONE who finds themselves on their own for the first time. I highly recommend it.

Finally! There are NO books out there like this! This book offers sound advice (that a parent like me would offer!) On Your Own For The First Time is absolutely the perfect graduation gift book. A guide to starting off in the real world is a true statement here. This book contains useful information for helping those that are getting out into the world and needs a reference guide (for when mom & dad aren't always around). It contains everything from employment to moving out to getting a car to money matters and life skills. I found out things that I never knew and I've been out on my own for quite a few years more than I'd like to mention!

This book is written like the author is speaking to a young person venturing off into the world. He relates to the reader, is very to the point and offers advice that is very much needed. After reading, it is very obvious that the author has thoroughly researched the topics.

I want to tell everyone that I have found the perfect gift for graduates or anyone else starting off on their own for the first,(or second time for that matter), it's a must!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real world guide book, January 25, 2002

I gave this book to my nephew (through the recommendation of a friend) as a graduation gift. He didn't say much when I gave it to him. I think he was disappointed I gave him a book. But he just called me to thank me and said it was the most useful book he had ever read. Thank you Jeff Bowers, thats the first time my nephew has ever called to thank me for a gift. I guess he read the chapter on etiquette.
