From the Inside Flap

At Your Own Risk: How the Risk-Conscious Culture Meets the Challenge of Business Change

Value chains. They define how your business is changing today due to globalization, tech-nological advances, competition, outsourcing, and reliance on global interdependency. They also spell out how effectively your company identifies and manages risks—such as product failures, environmental disasters, intellectual property theft, paralyzing snowstorms, pandemic fears, skills shortages, reckless lending policies, terrorism, identity and technological theft, industrial espionage, and new technology exploits—that challenge your organization's resiliency.

Whether in the boardroom or on the trading floor, rapid change without a value-aligned and well-defined process for managing risks and establishing a risk-conscious culture is a recipe for disaster. How can your organization manage risk in this new environment? At Your Own Risk shows you how, with practical advice to ensure that you are prepared to overcome or prevent risks resulting from inevitable changes and global events.

Based on over thirty years of experience as a practitioner, consultant, and advisor to CEOs and executive managers throughout the world and in many different industries, recognized industry leader Gary Lynch reveals in this essential guide a game plan to identify and manage a range of risks faced in this brave new globalized world of changing market dynamics and complex high-tech value networks. With practical and proven advice on creating a risk-conscious culture—from the mailroom clerk to the board of directors—this groundbreaking book explores:

  • Identifying changes that have significantly impacted the risk profile

  • Why every organization, regardless of size, is more vulnerable in today's business environment

  • How your business must rethink its attitudes about potential losses in order to survive in the future?

  • A complete set of internal and external resources and processes needed to create and sustain value for your organization

  • How every level of change makes your organization potentially vulnerable

  • The benefits of a value chain risk management (VCRM) approach

  • How your organization can develop an action plan, prioritize activities, budget its cost, execute the plan to manage a range of risks effectively, and create a risk- conscious culture

Relevant, timely, and filled with real-world action plans, At Your Own Risk provides case studies, interviews, and solutions from business, operational, and IT leaders worldwide that every organization and executive can put into action to ensure an organization protected from future disaster.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Risk Management Book, June 1, 2011

This review is from: At Your Own Risk: How the Risk-Conscious Culture Meets the Challenge of Business Change (Hardcover)
This is a very good introduction to risk management for your company. He covers risk management for the supply chain, IT, product development, project managment etc.. Risk management is a very potent topic with the extreme weather events and political events we have experienced in recent years. This coupled with the extending of shupply chains around the world, made this a very timely book for me. Lynch's credentials are rock-solid in this field, haveing spent his entire career in this arena. He has a second book on supply chain risk management that was not as useful as this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Corporate Risk Management and Decision Making, September 15, 2008
This review is from: At Your Own Risk: How the Risk-Conscious Culture Meets the Challenge of Business Change (Hardcover)
Gary Lynch's achievement is to take the management of risk from being a dry governance requirement, many times drafted in isolation, into being an essential component of the corporate decision making process. I recommend At Your Own Risk to all those involved in driving the value chain in their company.

5.0 out of 5 stars A whole new viewpoint, June 1, 2008

This review is from: At Your Own Risk: How the Risk-Conscious Culture Meets the Challenge of Business Change (Hardcover)
I've been a line positions most of my life and thought about risk in my area, but generally thought it was someone else's problem. Lynch's book smashed through my denial. With an easy to read style with great examples, Lynch demonstrates that "Risk Awareness" needs to be part of a company's culture. I am handing this book out and asking associates to begin asking a lot more "What if..." questions.
