5.0 out of 5 stars I want a personal penguin, too!
This book has a gentler charm than many of Boynton's titles, but it contains all of the warm humor and originality we've come to expect from her work. It's the story of an earnest little penguin longing to be best buddies with a skeptical hippo. The interaction of words and pictures makes the relationship between these two quirky animals unique, lively, and touching. I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not our favorite Boynton
We love Sandra Boynton in this house. However, compared to her other books, I found the prose in this one to be a bit clunky. It is still a sweet book, and the illustrations are amusing (a penguin is determined to befriend a hippo who is very befuddled by the whole situation) but I think the fact that this appears to be written as a song hinders it as a book. I am not...

This review is from: Your Personal Penguin (Boynton on Board) (Board book)
This book has a gentler charm than many of Boynton's titles, but it contains all of the warm humor and originality we've come to expect from her work. It's the story of an earnest little penguin longing to be best buddies with a skeptical hippo. The interaction of words and pictures makes the relationship between these two quirky animals unique, lively, and touching. I wish I had a Personal Penguin who adored me like that! Boynton also deftly translates this story's appeal to music, and the book includes a free download of "Your Personal Penguin" the song, delightfully performed by Davy Jones (of "The Monkees.") If you like a sweet tale with subtle wit, you'll love Your Personal Penguin!

5.0 out of 5 stars Did you buy the stuffed Personal Penguin?, October 19, 2006
This review is from: Your Personal Penguin (Boynton on Board) (Board book)
I'm not sure if many know this, but there is actually a stuffed penguin specially made to go with this book. Our local bookstore had it- what a cute gift set for a child! I must admit I've not been a huge Sandra Boynton fan in the past, but this was so cute (love the penguin) that I bought some as Christmas gifts and a set for myself too! I also downloaded Davy Jones from the Workman site, and I'm sure my nieces will love it too! Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Boynton Great -- the free song is a must, October 21, 2006
By
This review is from: Your Personal Penguin (Boynton on Board) (Board book)
This Boynton Book comes with access to a free mp3 of a companion song, sung by Davey Jones of the Monkees. The book (and the song) are simply about a penguin who wants to be best friends with a hippo. The illustrations are hilarious and the song is a lot of fun. The book as a stand alone doesn't seem all that interesting, but when you pair it with the song it is great! I have an 18 month-old who adores this book, but only when I sing it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Granddaughter will love this!!, November 17, 2006

I am not familiar with this authors books, but am always on the lookout for a new book for my granddaughter (11 months) She loves music so I new she would like this and she does. I did have a problem downloading the free music mp3. After you download the song you need to change the mpeg to mp3. Otherwise it thinks it is a movie clip and it is just the song. Always a fan of Davy, maybe I can start my granddaughter young!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The hippo in this book is so nonplussed, it's hysterical, June 24, 2008
This review is from: Your Personal Penguin (Boynton on Board) (Board book)
Basically, a short book about a penguin explaining his undying (kinda stalkerish, I must say) affection for a hippo.

Throughout the book, the hippo looks totally dumbstruck by all this attention.

If you're coming at it from a different angle, I guess it might be kinda creepy (the scene with the penguin shining a flashlight at the sleeping hippo comes to mind), but as my nieces know this is Not Really Appropriate Behaviour that just, to them, makes it funnier.

Found the song (downloadable... somewhere) to be a little uninspired though. *shrugs*

5.0 out of 5 stars More to "Penguin" than meets the eye, May 26, 2007

Like But Not the Hippopotomus, there is more to I Want to be Your Personal Penguin than meets the eye at first. The book is about all of the traits of our closest companion. It is about the one who wants to love us when we aren't particularly intersted in being loved. It is about the one who is with us during great adventure and also those moments when we think we may have even gone a little too far. It is about the one who is with us at night, and the one who is always actively listening to us. I'd say this is a very spiritual little book for those who choose to read with an open mind and open heart.

I am not sure if the melody was written first, or the words, but it is a bit clunky to just read. Still a cute story and I am glad we have it.

My son loves this book. He listens to it intently and at the end where the penguin asks "Please?" he says "pees?" I'm going to buy another copy for my sister-in-law who loves penguins because it is such a cute book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for toddlers, November 20, 2007

This book is great for slightly older kids. My 8 month old isn't very stimulated by it since the pages are mostly white which just a splash of color. Toddlers would really enjoy this book. It's a cute story about a penguin and a hippo. I'm hoping that as my daughter gets older, she'll enjoy it more.

5.0 out of 5 stars utterly romantic, April 8, 2007
This review is from: Your Personal Penguin (Boynton on Board) (Board book)
i'm a fan of sandra's older books ("moo baa la la la" is a favorite), but "personal penguin" may be her best book yet. the premise is clever, and the title is adorable -- a great way to learn about love, platonic and romantic.
