Book Description

September 25, 2006 2 and up
The irrepressible, ever-original Sandra Boynton introduces a brand new Boynton board book. Your Personal Penguin is a read-aloud, listen-along favorite for young children and the grown-ups who read to them. Fun to hold, the book tells the story of a slightly bewildered hippo and the loyal penguin who wants nothing more than to be his pal:

Now, lots of other penguins seem to be fine
in a universe of nothing but ice.
But if I could be yours, and you could be mine,
Our cozy little world would be twice as nice.
I want to be Your Personal Penguin.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want a personal penguin, too! October 7, 2006
Format:Board book
This book has a gentler charm than many of Boynton's titles, but it contains all of the warm humor and originality we've come to expect from her work. It's the story of an earnest little penguin longing to be best buddies with a skeptical hippo. The interaction of words and pictures makes the relationship between these two quirky animals unique, lively, and touching. I wish I had a Personal Penguin who adored me like that! Boynton also deftly translates this story's appeal to music, and the book includes a free download of "Your Personal Penguin" the song, delightfully performed by Davy Jones (of "The Monkees.") If you like a sweet tale with subtle wit, you'll love Your Personal Penguin!

5.0 out of 5 stars Did you buy the stuffed Personal Penguin? October 19, 2006
Format:Board book
I'm not sure if many know this, but there is actually a stuffed penguin specially made to go with this book. Our local bookstore had it- what a cute gift set for a child! I must admit I've not been a huge Sandra Boynton fan in the past, but this was so cute (love the penguin) that I bought some as Christmas gifts and a set for myself too! I also downloaded Davy Jones from the Workman site, and I'm sure my nieces will love it too! Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Boynton Great -- the free song is a must October 21, 2006
By antiomi
Format:Board book
This Boynton Book comes with access to a free mp3 of a companion song, sung by Davey Jones of the Monkees. The book (and the song) are simply about a penguin who wants to be best friends with a hippo. The illustrations are hilarious and the song is a lot of fun. The book as a stand alone doesn't seem all that interesting, but when you pair it with the song it is great! I have an 18 month-old who adores this book, but only when I sing it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Granddaughter will love this!! November 17, 2006

Format:Board book|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am not familiar with this authors books, but am always on the lookout for a new book for my granddaughter (11 months) She loves music so I new she would like this and she does. I did have a problem downloading the free music mp3. After you download the song you need to change the mpeg to mp3. Otherwise it thinks it is a movie clip and it is just the song. Always a fan of Davy, maybe I can start my granddaughter young!!

Basically, a short book about a penguin explaining his undying (kinda stalkerish, I must say) affection for a hippo.

Throughout the book, the hippo looks totally dumbstruck by all this attention.

If you're coming at it from a different angle, I guess it might be kinda creepy (the scene with the penguin shining a flashlight at the sleeping hippo comes to mind), but as my nieces know this is Not Really Appropriate Behaviour that just, to them, makes it funnier.

Found the song (downloadable... somewhere) to be a little uninspired though. *shrugs*

5.0 out of 5 stars More to "Penguin" than meets the eye May 26, 2007
By Mary
Format:Board book|Amazon Verified Purchase
Like But Not the Hippopotomus, there is more to I Want to be Your Personal Penguin than meets the eye at first. The book is about all of the traits of our closest companion. It is about the one who wants to love us when we aren't particularly intersted in being loved. It is about the one who is with us during great adventure and also those moments when we think we may have even gone a little too far. It is about the one who is with us at night, and the one who is always actively listening to us. I'd say this is a very spiritual little book for those who choose to read with an open mind and open heart.

My toddler loves penguins, but for some reason, can't focus on this book. She likes the song (downloaded it, and we sing it to her) but I'm guessing that the illustrations and text aren't engaging enough for her. I, on the other hand, find it amusing that the penguin is so bent on becoming friends with the reluctant hippo. Reminds me of how I met one of my friends, haha!

Update, 9/7/12: My now-17-month old LOVES this book. I guess she needed to grow into it? She now drags her stuffed animal penguins out of her toy box and brings this book over to me, and has me sing it to her over and over and over...and she HAS to have both of her penguins with her as the song is being sung. She'll also flip to the page that has the penguin playing the violin while the hippo's eating spaghetti and giggle at the picture. As for me, I still love this book! (Note: she doesn't like the downloaded song, now that she seems to enjoy the book more.)

2.0 out of 5 stars Our least favorite Boynton book July 7, 2011
Format:Board book|Amazon Verified Purchase
We bought this to complete our Boynton collection for our 2 year old, and she rarely asks to read it. It doesn't have the charm that her other books do. If you insist on completing a collection, then sure go ahead and pick it up. But if you have expectations that this book will be as engaging as Pajama Time, Barnyard Dance, or Hey Wake Up, then you will be disappointed.
