Book Description

August 1, 2006
With outrageously false accusations piling up against her famous political family and an ex-fiancé in hot water determined to take her down with him, the last thing Jana Jasper needs is more trouble — especially man trouble. But when she heads to the grocery store for an ice cream fix, not only does the muscled hunk in the frozen foods section ranting about spaceships and invasions look crazy, he looks…familiar.

Cavin of Far Star has never forgotten the girl he met during his weeks spent on that quaint little world, planet Earth, the girl who didn't believe he was real. And now he'll risk his future to save her. All she has to do is take him to her leader. Simple enough plan — although Jana isn't so easily convinced. Hell-bent on charming his way past her defenses, he's determined to stay one step ahead of the galaxy's most feared assassin — and may just capture his favorite Earthling's heart in the process.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Although the book's goofy cover art screams "D-grade syndicated sitcom," fans of Grant's action-packed interstellar romances (The Scarlet Empress, etc.) would do well to remember the old adage that you can't judge a book by its cover. Fueled by suspense and a sweet, playful romance between state senator Jana Jasper and Cavin Far Star, a human soldier from a distant planet, this colorful tale defies categorization. It starts out tender and whimsical, with hero and heroine connecting as children during Cavin's brief visit to Earth. Then, after the two meet up 20 years later, the story takes a decidedly Terminator-like turn, as the couple find themselves on the run from a bioengineered assassin and on a mission to save Earth from alien invasion—all while keeping Jana's political reputation squeaky clean. The story runs short on energy midway, bogged down by a transparent subplot involving a group intent on ruining Jana's political career. But once the race to save the planet starts up again, readers will rocket through to the book's pat but satisfying conclusion. (Aug.)

From Booklist

As a mute nine-year-old from a prominent California family, Jana rescued a space alien stuck in the tree outside her bedroom window and gained the gift of gab as well as her first kiss in return. Twenty-three years later, Cavin, now one of the Coalition Space Force's -highest--ranking military officers, returns to claim the girl he has never forgotten, and to warn her--and all Earth--of impending invasion. But Jana's got problems of her own--unknown persons have targeted her and her family as objects of a smear campaign in an attempt to remove her from office as the state's youngest senator--and it takes several attempts on her life and reputation to convince her to go along with Cavin's agenda. Grant's latest is full of her trademark fun and fast-paced adventure, featuring a good-girl politician who can't stop thinking of the hunky career soldier as her very own Peter Pan, an intergalactic assassin, the Russian mafia, and, for good measure, sly political commentary. 5.0 out of 5 stars Touching and Fun Interplanetary Romance, August 10, 2006
This review is from: Your Planet or Mine? (Otherworldly Men, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
At the age of nine, Jana rescues a glowing boy from a tree outside her bedroom window. She thinks of him as "Peter" and later convinces herself he was only her "imaginary" friend. Many years later, as a California state senator, she encounters an alien visitor in a supermarket. It's "Peter," real name Cavin, who has come to warn her that Earth has been designated for "acquisition" (supposedly benevolent) by the interstellar Coalition in whose military he is a high-ranking officer. Funny, tender, sexy, and suspenseful, this SF romance has it all. Jana is a delightful heroine, and her political dynasty family supplies a cast of likable supporting characters. In the process of deciding how to introduce Cavin to Earth's governments without either being dismissed as crazy or getting him locked up and "disappeared," she and Cavin have to combat Jana's political enemies as well as an extraterrestrial threat. Grant even manages to inspire some sympathy for the Terminator-like assassin pursuing Cavin. Along with the serious plot elements, there's plenty of fish-out-of-water fun as Jana helps Cavin adjust to the oddities of Earth culture and, of course, sexual tension as the two of them strive to resist their mutual attraction in order to keep focused on the crisis at hand. I loved every minute of this novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thrilling, Romantic Adventure, August 13, 2006
This review is from: Your Planet or Mine? (Otherworldly Men, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I am a huge fan of Susan Grant's novels, and this latest one I would place at the very top of her list in terms of wit, sexiness, unstoppable pacing. I literally couldn't stop reading this book and go to bed--and I was really tired. But I found myself turning and turning, having to go deeper into the book.

From the incredibly tender prologue to the fast-paced adventure, I loved every moment of this fantastic new book from one of my favorite authors.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars, August 1, 2006
This review is from: Your Planet or Mine? (Otherworldly Men, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jana Jasper was the one member of her family who lacked the gift of gab until magic entered her life. After saving the life of a boy she dubbed Peter, as in Pan, she made three wishes. One was to be able to speak, and after exchanging an innocent kiss, she can. Then, Peter disappears, and it looks as if her most special wish can not come true, and Jana dismisses the whole incident as a lonely girl with an imaginary playmate. Then, "Peter" reappears, at the grocery store, decked out like someone from a video game. At first, she can not believe her friend is back and is real, but it is true, Peter is real. He is Cavin Far Star, an alien who has defied his people to come and warn Jana in hopes of being able to prevent her home world from being taken over by his planet's fleet. Though Jana is thrilled to see Cavin, it is so not a good time for her as she is now a senator, and needs to avoid scandals, like having handsome alien men stay the night. Unfortunately, there is an alien assassin who makes the Terminator look friendly, and he is out for Cavin, and now, Jana's blood. Assaulted on multiple fronts, Jana and Cavin are in a race against time to save the world so that they, and everyone else on Earth, can have a future.

**** It might be safe to say this is one of Susan Grant's best yet. Despite the comical title, this is a thrilling action/adventure with a healthy shot of romance. There is plenty of humor, but just the right amount. Take the elements of every good sci-fi romance and add in a political thriller for spice, and you would have part of the recipe for this. There is a secret ingredient, but that is the author's own special touch, something that can not be replicated, just enjoyed. ****
