Editorial Reviews

Review

Mid-Ohio Valley Parent, January 2012
“This has been a great resource for moms-to-be throughout the years and this latest edition is no exception!”

InfoDad.com, 1/12/12
“This excellent book…certainly does make the process from pregnancy to birth (and for the first month or so afterwards) much easier to cope with and understand…The sensitivity and care with which Curtis and Schuler present all information—positive, negative or neutral—remain hallmarks of this fact-packed and thick oversize paperback…Reading it provides much of the assurance of a knowledgeable 24-hour-a-day companion who can take you through the many vicissitudes of pregnancy with a firm and knowing hand. Even women who have been pregnant before will benefit from the information here—and those in their first pregnancies will find the book invaluable.”

Sacramento Book Review, February 2012
“Most women will find that this book contains everything they need for a healthy pregnancy.”

Bookviews blog, March 2012
“As comprehensive a body of information about pregnancy as you will find anywhere.”

Upon finding out that they are pregnant, the first thing many women do (besides scheduling an appointment with their doctor or midwife) is go shopping for books. There are many pregnancy guides available, covering every baby-related topic under the sun, but it's important to get one that is as up-to-date as possible. Thank goodness for the new, seventh edition of "Your Pregnancy Week by Week"! This is one of those books that aims to answer every question readers could possibly have about how pregnancy affects their own health and about the growth of their baby. Each chapter tells readers how big their baby is during a particular week and offers information and advice on common pregnancy ailments, things that might come up when dealing with their healthcare provider, nutrition, exercise, and even topics like traveling and preparing your pet for your baby. As this book is written by a board certified gynecologist, pregnancy is approached from a very traditional, hospital-oriented view; readers who are interested in alternative birth topics will not find much useful information on ideas like birth centers or doulas. Readers will appreciate the extensive index, which makes it easy to find information on a specific subject, and everything is clearly-explained. Most women will find that this book contains everything they need for a healthy pregnancy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite Pregnancy Book March 29, 2012
Format:Paperback
I love this book. The pictures are great, it's wonderful to see where the baby is at every week. I liked this book a lot more than What to Expect When You're Expecting. I recommend this book to everyone I know who is expecting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great so far January 19, 2012
By Jess
Format:Paperback
I went to go open "What to Expect When Expecting" and it was downright horrifying. The first few chapters seemed to be about everything that could go wrong. I quickly ditched it and bought "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" and it is much more optimistic. Everything is neatly organized into a by-the-week manner, and it include pregnancy tips for both mom and dad, pictures, and lots of information. Would most defiantly recommend!

I am currently a father to be, and at first my wife and I were overjoyed with this book. The sections are nicely laid out, and we would flip to each new week and read it two or three times in a single day, oohing and aahing over the wonderful pictures of our baby growing and maturing.
But then I paid a bit more attention as I read, especially in the later pages of the book, and I became a bit furious.
First of all, as many others have noted, the book seems to try its hardest to frighten first-time mothers at every turn. I believe that it is important to know about common birth problems and defects, but the authors of the book take this a step too far. They insist on including some horrendous condition or complication in pretty much every chapter. Just when you are grooving on the great things happening to your baby's growth in a given week, they'll stop you with some horrific section like "why your baby will probably strangle themselves in the womb." I'm exaggerating, but that's the feeling I got in every chapter of the book.
Also, and this one angers me even more, the book is obviously and unapologetically written from a doctor's point of view. I don't mean that they write as a medical professional with tons of experience. They write more as a dictator of the delivery room, a place where the woman will have no choice but to follow every directive without question or complaint. The woman's role and control are downplayed at every turn.
And don't even get me started on their "section" on home births. They have one little 3-paragraph section, tucked away, that says basically "home birth is more likely to kill your baby... never do it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing December 26, 2012
By Libby
Format:Paperback
I hate this book. If you want to read week by week about all the terrible things that can happen to you and your baby then this is the book for you. It even has a section about what you should do if your partner beats the crap out of you. Good times.

At first glance, I picked this book off of the shelf because I wanted to see a week-by-week progression of my baby's growth because I find it fascinating. This book definitely delivers! With pictures and details about what organs are developing, I was hooked. I plan to eat according to what developments my baby is going through so I can make sure I have plenty of that kind of nutrient in my body.

There's frequently a 'disclaimer' paragraph that talks about how this book is not intentionally written to scare you, but it does it's best to educate you. I found it on at least 4 separate instances throughout the book. I can see why, it does spend alot of time going over every possible thing that could go wrong. As I went through further, it just seemed poorly put together, repeating itself and with information overlapping. I feel like this book was intended to be used more as a reference, rather than be ready as you know,...a book, from one page to the next.

I am seriously displeased at the section about Home Birth. It essentially states that home birth is NEVER safe! First of all, there are countless women around the world who do not give birth in a hospital and have no trouble at all. Secondly, there are no sources cited to support this. "We know that there are dangers to mom. First-time pregnant women who deliver at home have nearly triple the risk of complications after baby's birth." -What kind of complications? It would be nice to know exactly what he's referring to. After all, he's been so willing to tell me about every possible birth defect under the sun! I feel like it's pretty presumptuous of him to disparage home births.
