Book Description

0965704009 978-0965704007 January 1, 1999
The sub-title is "Owner's Manual A - Z". It is arranged as an encyclopedia, for easy reference, and is written for all those who have, hope to have, or dream of having, their own retail store. It fills a major gap in the "How To" business book category, as, although independent retailing is cerainly a Small Business, all the Small Businees books are about manufacturing or service industries, and are nearly all written by CPA's or academics. This is the first book written specially for the independent retailer, and the author has nearly twenty years experience as an independent retailer, and twenty-five years busibness experience before that. The book deals with every detail of day-to-day operation of a store, plus explanations of Financial Statements, etc., and the Appendix contains useful costing and other charts.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This is the first book written specially for the independent retailer. Arranged as an encyclopedia, it is a wonderful ready reference Owner's Manual, dealing with every imaginable problem in the storeowner's experience, from choosing an Accountant to classifyng customers by Zip code. Every aspect of a storeowner's life is discussed, from analyzing financial statements to dealing with difficult customers. Both as a planning guide for the would-be owner, and as a quick helper for the established retailer, it is invaluable.

About the Author

Robert Wells started retailing as an apprentice in a major London department store in 1951, becoming buyer of dining and living room furniture. This was followed by ten years in manufacturing with what was then the world's largest toy manufacturer, and then by a brief spell with an international firm of management consultants. This was ended in 1965 by an invitation to be the business manager of one of the oldest antiquarian bookstores in the United States, in Austin, and later Houston. In 1971 the opportunity arose to start his own British specialty retail store, in 1.650 sq. ft. By the time he sold it in 1989 he had enlarged it to 6,000 sq. ft., and it was the largest store of its kind in the United States. He still works part-time in the store (which failed in 1993, to be reopened under another name later that year), and is occupied in writing a British travel guide for American visitors, plus a short history of Britain which will also be available on CD, and a personal memoir.

This review is from: Your Retail Store (Paperback)
very good, very informative, and written in plain english. it is a good book because it focuses on small independent retailing, not service or production like most "start your own business" books.
