About the Author

Stuart Langridge is quite possibly the only person in the world to have a BS in computer Science and philosophy. When he's not fiddling about with computers, he's an information architect, author of SitePoint's "DHTML Utopia," a member of the WaSP's Scripting Task Force, and a drinker of decent beers. He's also one-quarter of the team at LugRadio, the world's premiere free and open source software radio show.

Tony Steidler-Dennison is a longtime Linux user, dating his first experience with Linux back to 1996. He's used Linux as his sole operating system at home, developed software on Linux systems, and administered such systems in environments as diverse as robotic telescope control, online shopping, presidential politics, and commercial aviation. Tony has coauthored two books on Linux and over the years, he's written more than a dozen magazine articles on topics from Drupal and content management systems to podcasting with open source tools. Since February 2005, he's engineered and hosted "The Roadhouse Podcast," a weekly hour of "the finest blues you've never heard." Since the purchase of an Intel-based Mac Mini, Tony has become both obsessed and fascinated with the operating system he calls "Linux with a pretty face."

Tony is currently an avionics systems engineer with Rockwell Collins, Inc. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, engineering open source solutions in the commercial aviation industry.

First of all, I don't understand the editorial above on this book...550 pages??? If you count the index it is only 329 and won't reach near 550 even if you count the wasted paper for all the numerous sitepoint advertisements in the back! I ordered this book, it arrived just as the photo and title are shown. What I got was that sitepoint book but with a couple hundred less pages and a different ISBN number. The number shown in the book is ISBN 0957240226. As far as the book goes other than all the false information...the book is fair. It is lacking in content and skims over way too much. If you are like me and buy as many books as you can on this topic, then buy it. If you want a good book on the topic that covers enough to get your linux server up and running...deffinately find another book...this one is only good as an additional reference provided you are looking for an answer that they happened to manage to include. I would strongly advise to either wait until there are used copies available for cheap prices or find one from a publisher other than sitepoint!!

I'm a web developer and bought this book hoping that it would--as advertised--teach me how to setup and install a working LAMP server. I found this book to read more like a checklist than anything. Install this, uncheck that. The book provided little insight as to the reasoning behind these decisions, nor did it provide any detail on how to fine tune or configure some of the more arcane components like email or ftp. It definitely did not teach you anything about how to live and operate in the Linux environment. These I had to figure out on my own. This book reads like a free website article repackaged and bound. Stay clear of this one.

The focus in this book is on one of the most common implementations of Linux; as a complete Internet solution with a Linux server, Apache web server, MySQL database, and PHP language. This combination is commonly called a LAMP installation. The authors lead the reader through how to pick an appropriate Linux distribution for your needs, install and configure the Apache web server, use MySQL to store data and use PHP to build Web applications.

The authors assume little or no knowledge of Linux and so include a basic introduction to Linux including common daily tasks and administration. Once your Linux server is up and running they also cover how to use various utilities to administer it remotely. Other chapters include information on server security, GNOME, file system, and permissions. This is not a bad introduction to Linux and Apache but it does almost nothing with MySQL and PHP. This is a basic text on how to get a LAMP server up and running. It is not a text on how to program with PHP or how to create and administer a MySQL database. For this information you will need to consult other texts. However, since a LAMP server is one of the most common uses of Linux and there are specific techniques to get the Linux server, Apache, MySQL and PHP all installed and working together seamlessly this book is very valuable for this specific task. Build Your Own Web Server Using Linux and Apache is recommended to anyone who wants to get a LAMP server up and running with a minimum of frustration.
