To Cynthia Kocialski, "reforestation" of burnt start-up lands is a crucial part of revitalizing the business world. Not only does this book detail the missteps that lead to start-up nightmares, but helpful questionnaires and exercises guide new business owners through potentially volatile territory. I really appreciated how she emphasized being patient- most entrepreneurs are impatient and want to transform their ideas into a reality now. As Kocialski writes, "They want to be the cook, but they are really more akin to the chef." What I learned from this book, and what every entrepreneur needs to realize, is that this is a process and it takes time- success is not just about having a great product, it's about the business itself, and honing and refining the process to see what works. This is an ingenious application of something we're all familiar with- the scientific method- and in a market of innumerable books chock full of nonsensical buzzwords (market intensive strategies, adaptive strategies, diversification, retrenchment), Kocialski makes sense of it all to make entrepreneurship dreams a reality.

Whether you're an experience entrepreneur or not, there are essentials that must be understood about the ever changing landscape of business. Your Start-Up Company As An Experiment is very insightful, practical and a great book to read. I'd highly recommend spending $12 to $17 dollars on this book if it were priced that high. It could save you thousands in the long run, seriously. I'm definitely excited about what the author may come out with next. I loved the illustrations! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for every entrepreneur September 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is truly an excellent book for every entrepreneur whether they are starting a business on their own or seeking funding to grow their business. As the author points out, the traditional business plan is not the right way to get funding because they are basically written on the hope and expectations of the entrepreneur, void of any "real" substance to show that the plan will work. This book gives you an alternate and far more logical way to go about starting your business. And that is through the scientific method of hypothesis, experiments and conclusions. In other words, you will need to "show" rather than "tell" potential investors that your business concept will work. When an investor sees that your concept is already working (and that you are, in fact, able to make it work), getting funding is easy because they are no longer investing in the unknown.

The book contains some great examples of businesses that have proven the concept first and received funding and/or went on to be successful because they scaled up ONLY after proving their theories. The book also includes a Start up Vision and Purpose Questionnaire and shows you how to set up and validate your business "experiments."

Don't let the page count fool you on this one. This is very good information--unique stuff that I have not read anywhere else. If you want every shot at succeeding or growing your new start-up, you're going to want all the info up front. This book is going to save you time, money and aggravation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great new way to look at business August 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book takes a unique look at one way to improve your businesses success using the scientific method. The book goes such further then just creating a business plan, it explains how to gain investors and how to do so before the business is even created, the tip to refer to it as "an experimental startup" really has gone a long way to entice small investors in my business. Not only does the book show easily repeatable ways to insure your business is successful, but it also provides many examples of mistakes others have made and how to avoid them. A great read and a wealth of information for any small business owner.
