A great deal of information. I wish my doctor would read this book! We would both feel a lot better.

This review is from: Your Stomach: What is Really Making You Miserable and What to Do About It (Praktikos Health Series) (Hardcover)
Waking up doctors and individuals to the importance of stomach acid and the foolishness of using antacids is well worth five stars.

Dr. Jonathan Wright is one of the top dozen or so brilliant MDs helping to educate doctors and people while providing excellent medical care for his patients. His lectures and presentations are usually full of extremely valuable information.

Unfortunately this book waffles around for the first twenty pages talking about conventional thought promoting antacids as a cure for GERD or acid reflux. It isn't until about page twenty when Dr. Wright finally starts to discuss some of the important scientific concepts (and he never gets technical). Another 19 pages convey some useful information (for the majority of people that weren't aware of this already).

As another reviewer pointed out, only 39 pages of this book is actual discussion of the topic, the rest is supporting references. I don't have a problem with this book being short (it can literally be read in just a few minutes).

I had hoped this would be a good medical reference book to add to my shelf of great books. Unfortunately there is very little solid information in this book. If you understand the basic concept that most people with stomach issues (including acid reflux) actually suffer from low stomach acid, not too much stomach acid, and you understand that consuming antacids only gives temporary relief while causing more long term issues, then there is no reason to purchase this book.

I'm truly disappointed by this book as I consider Dr. Jonathan Wright to be one of the best colleagues in our fight against incompetent medical care. (I never hesitate to refer clients to him for care.)

2.0 out of 5 stars More like a short medical dissertation, November 17, 2009

This review is from: Your Stomach: What is Really Making You Miserable and What to Do About It (Praktikos Health Series) (Hardcover)
The actual writing is 38 double spaced pages with one-inch margins. It is not a substantial amount of information. There are two more pages citing databases for finding a doctor, and 104 pages of notes and bibliography references. Most of the discussion is about the problem, but there isn't a lot about what to do about it, in spite of what the cover says. If you have never heard some of the discussion about the effectiveness of current stomach remedies, this might be of interest. If you are looking for more in-depth analysis, this is not your book.

Never have I been more disappointed in a book before. 130+ pages in the book, but only 39 are actually the book. The rest of the book is the bibliography. Having suffered from reflux for years, I have even had the gastric fundoplication surgery yet still suffer. I was hoping this book might offer some new info, but all it really does is summarize the authors various readings of other books and studies. Save you money and visit sites like Web MD.

Useful information, however, a bit disappointed that most as in 3/4 of the book is references.. I have other books from Dr. Wright and like them.

This book has some good information, but the actual content is very, very small. There is a huge bibliography that is larger than the actual reading.

I do not recommend this book. It is poorly written in that it is extremely repetative. The author states over and over that chronic heartburn, ulcers and other common stomach ailments are caused by low stomach acid, don't take antacids, treatment can include taking HCL tablets that can be purchased at health food stores but one should consult their doctor before any treatment are tried. There I just saved you both the time and money on this book!!!

The elaborate title of the book is very misleading.More than half of the book is filled with bibliographies and references. Most of the information in the book can be gotten for free from various sources.I wasted my time purchasing this book and is very
happy I was able to return it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hardback pamphlet - not a book, November 18, 2011
By
This review is from: Your Stomach: What is Really Making You Miserable and What to Do About It (Praktikos Health Series) (Hardcover)
There is very little new information in this book, other than to tell you that anti-acids are not good for you. That's probably true, but you just got that information from me in one sentence. As other reviewers have noted, the book is only 39 pages if all the references and bibliography are excluded. The 39 pages are also in a large font, and double spaced. You will read the "book" in about 15 minutes. I checked it out from the library and I was still annoyed by it.
