Great Ideas in the Wrong Book

Thank you, Joe. I have enjoyed my morning coffee with you for years and I when you starting talking about your book I was interested. But when Blake appeared on Squawk Box with you one morning, she sold me. My son is 13, and I too am trying to educate him in economics in the face of wrongheaded indoctrination.

I have three small points about the book: First de Tocqueville wrote two centuries ago, not three. Second, water containing fifteen parts per million of oil is 99.9985 percent (not 99.985%) pure. Lastly, your asterisks are too small! It's frustrating when you get to the bottom of the page and find a footnote, and then can't find the passage the note refers to.

But the biggest problem I have with your book is that you wrote the wrong one.

You make five very important points:
1. Free market capitalism makes the pie bigger and while it is shared out unevenly, even the guy with the smallest piece gets more than his share would be of a purely socialist pie.
2. Americans have for most of their history championed free markets, and it isn't an accident that we also are the wealthiest nation on earth.
3. Free market capitalism is the natural state of things and governments only make markets less free.
4. Fair results are not necessarily equal results.
5. If cost-benefit analyses are ignored, we will necessarily be paying more and more for less and less.

Now it is clear that these points are embraced much more by the Right in this country than by the Left. However, by putting Liberals and Progressives in your cross-hairs you put off the very persons that need to understand the lesson. You're preaching to the choir--we need a book that preaches to the sinners.Read more ›

Unique approach appreciated

As a dad, I thought this was a great read. So much of the content and dialogue with the fabulous Blake reminds me of my own experiences with my two daughters (who are also fabulous). Those of us bringing up kids have a definite advantage over those of you who don't in understanding the perspective in this book, but it's not necessary if you have the ability to look beyond your own experiences. Parents are attempting to pass along an ethic to future generations in a very challenging time. This book illustrates the challenge of our generation and demonstrates the dialogue all of us parents need to be having with our kids: listen, understand, teach, repeat.

I appreciate those people in a position of having some influence in carrying on the great American traditions who stand up and make a difference. Thanks to Joe and Blake for doing so in a very unique way.

I don't have kids but after listening to my fourteen year old nephew bash America when I hired him to help me in the yard, I couldn't help but fret over where he got these ideas....I agree with others that it is sad that a book like this even needs to be written but I found it be refreshing for anyone who wants to know how capitalism and the free markets work. No "rocket science" here just well explained economics. I will recomend the book to my nephew!!

Would love to have seen some illustrations within the book.

Great Book

This was a great book. It gives a lively and well researched defense of capitalism and excoriates the progressive agenda. This book points out that there are two sides to every issue and the New York Times editorial page always takes the wrong side, whereas the Wall Street Journal is inevitably right. It points out that unions are almost always bad, especially in the public sector and a total disaster for public schools. It provides convincing arguments against regulation and provides support for free markets and individual freedom. It was refreshing to read a book that employs and simply explains the economic insights of Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Joseph Schumpeter, Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how free markets and capitalism raise living standards and enhance personal freedom.

Well done

Good book for kids to start learning about the US economic system and why its so successful. Kids today don't learn about the benefits of being an entrepreneur and what the US economic engine has acccomplished. Our teachers usually through no fault of their own spend more time talking about slavery and gay rights than they do preparing kids to make a living in a rapidly changing, global economy. Fun book for kids and creates some fun dinner time discussions. Don't listen to the haters. How many books have their kids written??

The book's title is off the mark.

I found out about this book by listening to interviews from the Dennis Prager and Dennis Miller radio shows with the author. I was expecting a book about how teachers were miss informing their students about economic realities and how the author dealt with the issue. That was not the case. Although a good read about basic economics (If your are savvy about the economy and how it works, this is not the book for you), it had very little to do with the title. I was disappointed about that.

I actually read the book in 2 days and it is a wonderful book, and very well written. I am not a parent but would recommend it to any parent. He clearly doesn't hate what is being taught, he just desires a more even handed balanced education. Liberals clearly wont like it and conservatives will like it. Moderates should be able to see his point of view even if they may disagree with him.
