Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Blakeslee's beginner's guide to all things culinary could prove as essential for new cooks as a good knife, far exceeding it's stated goal: to give novice cooks a solid foundation in technique and tools, as well as an understanding of how they work with raw ingredients to create a finished dish. Essentially two books in one, a kitchen-basics primer and a recipe collection, Blakeslee takes his time covering fundamentals like kitchen layout, ovenware, stocking the pantry, and techniques such as dicing onions, folding batter, folding napkins, and even boiling water. Dishes are detailed with the care of a doting mother, instructing with clear text and more than 1,000 step-by-step photos while avoiding condescension. Blakeslee heavily favors familiar foods and basic techniques-scrambled eggs, garlic bread, mac and cheese, and meatloaf-though cooks ready to expand their repertoire will find dishes like Ahi Tuna Burritos and tempura vegetables. Blakeslee tosses in everything he can think of for cooking couples just starting out, including menus for casual and upscale get-togethers, tips on serving wine, and variations for many of his recipes. This volume should sustain newlyweds and other cooking partners well past their first year together.

More About the Author

Robert L. Blakeslee (born in 1959) started cooking at the age of 7. His first cooking gig was for his father who paid him 10 cents a meal to make him breakfast, and he started creating his first recipes at the age of 14. His first book "Your Time to Cook" won the prestigious Benjamin Franklin National Award for "Cookbook of the Year" presented in New York at the International Book Expo, from the IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association).

On top of being a gourmet chef, Blakeslee pursued a career in the arts - working as a graphic designer and art director for Fortune 500 corporations, and international advertising agencies. There he developed his abilities in food photography, illustration, and copywriting. It was with this combination of skills he was able to create his two cookbooks, each of which contain over 1800 photographs and illustrations. These books leave nothing to the imagination and are designed for anyone who wants to see how to cook rather than try to read complicated instructions. The cookbooks contain some of the most popular dishes from around the world and they are sold in 4 continents and 16 countries.

An interesting fact about Mr. Blakeslee's family. Robert's Great Grandfather G.S. Blakeslee invented the first dishwasher, and the company manufactured large commercial (restaurant) dishwashers and kitchen equipment for 100 years, until the company was sold in the 1970's.

Blakeslee has created a website: www.YourTimeToCook.com which has recipe videos, book descriptions, television appearances and more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Visually Beautiful, January 7, 2010
This review is from: Your Time to Cook: A First Cookbook for Newlyweds, Couples, & Lovers (Hardcover)
My husband and I have been married just a few months and we got this book for Christmas. Although we can both boil water, neither of us is very experienced in the kitchen. (We order lots of take-out.) When we began thumbing through the pages, the first thing that struck us was how beautiful it is. There are full-color photos on just about every page, including ones that are next to EACH step of EVERY recipe. (I got a number of cookbooks for my shower, but none of them have as many photos as this book.) For me, this is really helpful during the learning process, because it is so much easier to follow an instruction if I can see it visually. But what I really appreciate is that there are so many basic recipes and so much helpful information in each chapter. We have already tried out some of the breakfast dishes, including a number of omelets that came out perfect. I also LOVE the chapter on entertaining. Along with suggested menus (with recipes that are in the book), it gives lots of ideas for hosting all kinds of parties--sit down dinners, buffets, cocktail parties--including pointers for setting the right mood (there are even napkin-folding instructions). The author is pretty funny, too. His introductions to the chapters and the comments he makes at the recipes really crack us up. Although we just started using this cookbook, I can already tell that it is going to be one of our favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the Cookbook I needed!, January 11, 2010
This review is from: Your Time to Cook: A First Cookbook for Newlyweds, Couples, & Lovers (Hardcover)
I am a wannabe cook. The vast majority of cookbooks give great recipes, but you have got to already understand what they are talking about. Talk the talk. But what about those of us who are "outsiders" to the cooks lingo? Newbies?
This is a unique cookbook in that it both tells & shows me how to make the recipe! AWESOME & Just what I needed.
Great cookbook. I look forward to trying more recipes as they all look yummy! I plan to give this book as wedding gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, great cookbook!!, January 10, 2010
This review is from: Your Time to Cook: A First Cookbook for Newlyweds, Couples, & Lovers (Hardcover)
I received this cookbook as a gift, and in the first week of having it, I've already reached for it on 4 different occasions, and have been happy with it every time. All of the recipes are really well written, the book is organized extremely well, and the pictures are wonderful. It contains just about every basic recipe you can think of, and also has wonderful versions of old favorites as well. There are lots of photos throughout which really helps not only to help pick a recipe with your eyes, but also to help you along the way while you're executing the recipe.

I've been very happy with this cook book and am feeling very excited and encouraged about trying more recipes from it.

Such a great cookbook! So helpful! It's got everything in it! :D
