Book Description

March 3, 2008
In the tradition of DK's best-selling title, I'm Pregnant, which has sold 200k copies worldwide to date, comes another must-have DK book on how to raise a contented and confident little one. This book taps into the growing demand for child-centered advice on parenting, offering professional information and age-appropriate strategies to help parents deal with all the big toddler issues, from bedtime routines to temper tantrums to mealtime. Its reassuring and personal tone arms parents with an understanding of how their child develops socially, emotionally, and physically in the first four years without ever being preachy or patronizing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! A decent toddler book., March 22, 2008
This review is from: Your Toddler Month By Month (Paperback)
I've been searching for a book that falls in the middle of the spectrum between Dr. Sears and What to Expect the Toddler Years and think this is it. I loved "I'm Pregnant" and was thrilled to find a toddler book by the same publisher with the same format. There are lots of pictures and sidebars and the author's style is not at all condescending, though like "I'm Pregnant" this isn't the catchiest title! The book doesn't actually go month by individual month, it actually is organized into sections for 12-18 months, 18-24 months, 2-3 years, and 3-4 years which makes a lot more sense for toddler development stages. We practice what my best friend dubbed "realistic attachment parenting" and this book is very much in line with that. In other words, we do a lot of attachment style and pay attention to our child's personality/needs, but draw the line at things that aren't practical for us, like co-sleeping or constant babywearing. One thing I particularly liked about this book is that there's one indexed entry on breastfeeding, which basically says--it's a highly personal decision how long to do it. Don't look for weaning advice or a celebration of extended breastfeeding here, just a couple of straightforward sentences. The author has good credentials and solid sources. The sections on brain development are easy to read and fascinating! I recommend this book to anyone who wants practical advice on raising and appreciating their toddler.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best toddler how-tos, May 14, 2009

This review is from: Your Toddler Month By Month (Paperback)
"Your Toddler Month by Month" is a little bit of a deceptive title that would have you perusing charts and tables of milestones, but this well-written and photographed book is a very, very good encapsulation of toddler-preschooler development and well-researched parenting strategies. Among the dozen or so toddler books I've read, this one is one of the best and is chock full of useful techniques from how to talk to your older toddler to supporting memory development, to managing behavior. Also brilliant is the inclusion of the years two through four, which is a really monumental period of self-realization for tots and yet one that few books truly cover in depth.

I can easily recommend this book to all parents and caregivers without reservation. It's a great read, quite accessible, and filled with interesting facts about toddlerhood. Highly, highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A handy guide to have on-hand., December 14, 2010

This review is from: Your Toddler Month By Month (Paperback)
I chose this book because it was by the same publisher as "I'm a Mom, Now What?", and I liked that book for my son's first year. I also liked "What to Expect in the First Year," but it is very black & white. (Example: give your baby chunks of banana at 8 mos. - my son choked!!) It is not as detailed as the First Year series, but it definitely gives a good heads-up as to what to expect in each 6 month period. The chapters are grouped as 12-18 mos., 18-24 mos., and so on. It contains informational sections on brain development. My favorite part of the book is the section on the different types of parenting and how they affect children. It gave me a lot of insight into my own upbringing, and why I react the way that I do to certain things. Therefore, this book also provided me with examples of how I will choose to raise my son. Very helpful and recommended.
