Finally! A decent toddler book.,
By
This review is from: Your Toddler Month By Month (Paperback)
I've been searching for a book that falls in the middle of the spectrum between Dr. Sears and What to Expect the Toddler Years and think this is it. I loved "I'm Pregnant" and was thrilled to find a toddler book by the same publisher with the same format. There are lots of pictures and sidebars and the author's style is not at all condescending, though like "I'm Pregnant" this isn't the catchiest title! The book doesn't actually go month by individual month, it actually is organized into sections for 12-18 months, 18-24 months, 2-3 years, and 3-4 years which makes a lot more sense for toddler development stages. We practice what my best friend dubbed "realistic attachment parenting" and this book is very much in line with that. In other words, we do a lot of attachment style and pay attention to our child's personality/needs, but draw the line at things that aren't practical for us, like co-sleeping or constant babywearing. One thing I particularly liked about this book is that there's one indexed entry on breastfeeding, which basically says--it's a highly personal decision how long to do it. Don't look for weaning advice or a celebration of extended breastfeeding here, just a couple of straightforward sentences. The author has good credentials and solid sources. The sections on brain development are easy to read and fascinating! I recommend this book to anyone who wants practical advice on raising and appreciating their toddler.

One of the best toddler how-tos,

"Your Toddler Month by Month" is a little bit of a deceptive title that would have you perusing charts and tables of milestones, but this well-written and photographed book is a very, very good encapsulation of toddler-preschooler development and well-researched parenting strategies. Among the dozen or so toddler books I've read, this one is one of the best and is chock full of useful techniques from how to talk to your older toddler to supporting memory development, to managing behavior. Also brilliant is the inclusion of the years two through four, which is a really monumental period of self-realization for tots and yet one that few books truly cover in depth.
I can easily recommend this book to all parents and caregivers without reservation. It's a great read, quite accessible, and filled with interesting facts about toddlerhood. Highly, highly recommended.

I chose this book because it was by the same publisher as "I'm a Mom, Now What?", and I liked that book for my son's first year. I also liked "What to Expect in the First Year," but it is very black & white. (Example: give your baby chunks of banana at 8 mos. - my son choked!!) It is not as detailed as the First Year series, but it definitely gives a good heads-up as to what to expect in each 6 month period. The chapters are grouped as 12-18 mos., 18-24 mos., and so on. It contains informational sections on brain development. My favorite part of the book is the section on the different types of parenting and how they affect children. It gave me a lot of insight into my own upbringing, and why I react the way that I do to certain things. Therefore, this book also provided me with examples of how I will choose to raise my son. Very helpful and recommended.

May be too touchy-feely for some,

This book is comprehensive, thoughtful and very, very loving. The author is a therapist and it really shows! If you're not into self-questionnaires and somewhat heavy handed promotion of child-centered parenting, this is not the book for you.
The author's advice also isn't always very realistic. I found it a bit curious that the author talks about how it is normal for a 12+ month old to not be sleeping through the night but suggests that you're better off solving the problem as soon as possible. In my mind, this is about the age that it would be VERY difficult to start sleep training a child. Either it's already done or you wait year or two until the child has grown out of it on their own. Maybe that's just my opinion. It just seems the occupy a strange middle ground between attachment philosophies and more parent-led methods. It's a good book, but I would have liked to know this before I purchased.

I have added this text to my child care and development library. The writing and explanations are simple and straight to the point, which I enjoy since I do not have much time to read. The neuroscience explanations are very interesting and add a dimension to this reference that I have not seen much of (or was too simplified) in other books.

I loved reading this book until I got to the end of the 24th month (my son's 2) and then wonders if I can remember what I've read after that chapter. Somehow I wished its chapter is not divided by age specific. But nonetheless, a good read.

I bought it based on the reviews and didn't want to get "what to expect the toddler years" as it also didn't get good reviews. But I was disappointed by this book because I feel it is giving statistical information and it doesn't go in depth of advising how to deal with toddlers.
I wouldn't recommend it .I will be looking for another good book

Could have been better,

I find there are too many photos of toddlers, I mean they're cute, and stuff, but I'd rather not pay and not contribute to forest destruction. There is also somewhat too much theory there, and little practical advice. Could have been shorter too, it is quite watery at times. I bought it, flipped through it and haven't found a single answer for any of my toddler's small issues (and he's overall a normal toddler, I am not talking a special needs child).
Being a Masters student I find it is "wanna be" research based book, but then you know, it just not academic enough. It parted with practical down to earth guide, but never really reached the well quoted and researched book. And by the way, I am sorry, I am not impressed when author says in the beginning that she is raising 2 kids. TWO, seriously, they haven't even grown up yet and haven't had their families to be really talking about how the author is being a good parent. Would not recommend the book, not worth the money. Just get in the library and save the trees.
